My goals for 2008
Sounds good - what will happen if you get there, change your name to SkinnyB? Setting goals and writing them out is very helpful in getting them done!

That's exactly what I'm trying for here. I really want to take things more seriously this time around, and it always helps if you know someone's checking up on you. Anyways, thanks for the replies.
CJ, I don't think I'll ever change my nickname to SkinnyB. I've had the nickname for about 10 years. I'll always be chunky at heart.

I read your blog. Goodluck!
I have plenty of spare tubes. That's why I was so bummed when I broke a spoke, because I had all the stuff I needed to fix a flat, or other things that might come up while I ride. But I had to call in the meat wagon for the spoke.
And if that was a joke that I just don't get, then pardon my ignorance.
Thanks again for all the replies.

Good luck and keep updating the blog!
Not having ever broken a spoke, what exactly happens? I would assume the wheel would go out of true. Could you wrap the spoke around another and loosen the brakes or is it too far out of whack?

I don't even want to know what would have happened if I had kept riding. Basically, the spoke broke right at the nipple (there was still a little bit of thread left on the spoke), and the wheel was mostly in true except for a huge bulge to one side right where the spoke broke. I could have loosened the brake quite a bit to let it rotate freely, but if I had kept riding, especially at 270 lbs, it probably would have gotten worse and worse with every turn.
Also, if you break a spoke and keep riding, then it starts to put all kinds of uneven tension on the other spokes, and they can start to break. I haven't experienced this, but I heard it from a few people. I'm sure that it depends on how many spokes you have too. Like, the fewer spokes you have, the more the wheel gets messed up when you break one.
At any rate, I guess I'll see the long term effects, but it seems to be fine for now.

It's too soon to be worrying about it, but don't ignore it.
Sooner or later there will come a time when your nicknmae is in conflict with your self-image and at that point you must address your self-talk.
Self image and weight have a long, well-documented history of mutual influence.
All I'm saying is, tell yourself that you are chunky everyday and that's the way you'll stay.
When it starts to get in my way I'll change my username to ClydeNoMo'
heh.
best of luck,

Just checked out the blog. It's official, you are hooked on tri. Congrats!
I figured I'd give my 2 cents as I also have been working on my weight.
I didn't see any mention of an eating plan on your blog. I didn't have one either up until very recently, the exercise was enough to make the scale move down so I didn't worry about it.
Well eventually the exercise was not enough but I was making gains in my fitness so I didn't really give it much attention.
I have a plan now, it's working and I'm wishing I would have given it the proper respect from the beginning, I'd be much further along.
Just thought I'd toss this out there. Maybe you will be spared the regret I'm feeling right now about eating too much all of last year.
Best of Luck
That's a good point, Big_3.
I actually have a vague eating plan. The main thing I've been doing this month is keeping very close track of what I eat. I have another blog (too boring to post the link here) where I just write everything I eat. I do it in a blog just because it's simple to post in, and I can access it from anywhere. I gave the link to my Dad and a few other people so I know people are checking up on me. Plus, my wife has been really supportive in my goals.
Basically, I have a protein shake for breakfast, and small lunches and dinners. I have tried to cut out fast food and other junk like that, but the main thing is I've just been eating less. Plus, since I know I have to write it down, the only snacks I ever have are fruit or almonds and raisins. Since cutting sugar out of the diet, it actually hasn't been that hard to eat well. I don't really have those intense cravings like I used to have. Plus, I eat a lot slower, and that helps me to feel more full after eating less food. And, I drink a ton of water, and that helps a lot too.
Thanks for everyone's comments and support. I really am getting hooked on triathlon, and I hope I can stick with it. I have a tendency to get really excited about things for a few months, and then get bored with them. I think if I start to see results, though, that I'll stick with it. But it really helps to know that people are checking on my, and that people are pulling for me. Thanks again to everyone.
BTW, I think ClydeNoMo' would be an awesome name. We'll have to race to 199 to see who gets it.

WHEN you get down to the goal weight you want you could always say you are
'The Artist formerly known as Chunky B'
Good luck and keep on truckin'

I love it. I could just have a little symbol for my name, like the silhouette of a skinny person or something.
Thanks for the motivation.

The motivation is free,

Maybe we'll have to have a contest for my new username when I get under 200 lbs. The prize will be an autographed picture of myself.

Good work man!
My neighbor brought his rollers over for me to borrow last week and I gave them a try. Who would have thought you could crash so many times in your own basement?
Did you sign up for the Provo tri or are you going to do Cache Valley with Amy?

HunkyB?
SvelteB ?
Since you'll be smaller, how about just "B"? Or Maybe "b"
Aunt B? (sorry,couldn't resist)
I'm with POC...change it when the time comes.
And good on you for wanting to make a positive change in your life...whatever comes next, you've already done the hardest part.

Nice blog. I too am a large guy, hence the name. Actually I'm 5'11 275, i got an inch on ya. So far i've done numerous oly's and a half iron. I'm training for Ironman CDA this june, so I know where you are coming from in wanting to drop weight and get better/faster. Hard to do especially when trying to have the correct nutrition on the long rides and runs.
What kind of rims are you using, as i had problems with spokes myself until I changed to hand made rims. I little heavier, but much better in the long run.
Keep up the hard work and it's nice to see another true Clydesdale, not someone 6'4 and 220, is out there.
I have "Alex R450" rims (28 spoke). They've actually been really good so far, as far as staying true. I'm hoping that the broken spoke was just a fluke. If it keeps happening, I'll have to look into getting some new ones. Thanks for the feedback.
Oh, and I think SvelteB is at the top of the list so far.

I'll have to post a video of me riding my rollers one of these days. I've gotten pretty good, but I still get pretty squirrely once in a while.
I'm still torn between Cache Valley and Provo. Is Amy set on doing the Cache Valley one, and are you going to race with her? They both look like good races, but one is only like 10 minutes from my house.

Man, I was thinking HunkyB or SpunkyB before seeing Anton's post. Gotta be more creative I guess!
Monkey See? haha

Yeah, but the one close to your house does the swim in Utah Lake. No thanks. Cache Valley is a TriUtah race and those are done well (plus, the shirts are technical running shirts instead of cotton t's). It is only two weeks after Vikingman, so I am not planning on it. It will have gender separate waves, so I won't get to race with Amy anyway. I will probably return the favor from Vikingman and watch the boys and cheer on Amy.

A few people have expressed some interest in my blog lately, and have asked questions about my background, and I figured I'd just post here and let everyone know what my plans are for this year, as well as a little background.
I got into tri last year when my brother coaxed me into doing a sprint tri, and because I wanted to lose weight. I didn't train very seriously, and DNFed my first race (I got a flat on the bike, and had to walk all the way back). I did another sprint race later in the year, and finished in 2:05.
I've decided that I really want tri to be a part of my life, and I really want to get in shape. I'm 5'10'', and I weighed 275 at the beginning of the year (maybe a little less now). I'm going to race in Spudman (Olympic) in July, and probably do a sprint in June, but I haven't decided which one.
I want to finish Spudman in under 4 hours, but my main goal for the year is to get back to 200 pounds. I say "back to 200" but I haven't really been under 200 pounds since Junior High, so I would be pretty happy. I figure goals are worthless if you don't write them down and tell someone, so here it is. Hopefully I'll be able to stick with my goals better than I did last year. I'll be documenting my experiences in my blog at http://coleduketri.blogspot.com/. There are even some sweet "before" pics. But, I warn you, they are not for the faint of heart.
