Garmin 305 - speed
Are you looking to set the circumference? Haven't used Garmin but I plug in cm on mine I think. here's a chart with wheel sizes and circumferences:

What Chunky said. It read identical to my Cateye which had a user set circumfrence, so I think it's pretty spot on.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
You'll likely also want to use it in "GPS Off" mode when you're inside on the trainer. I'm surprised it doesn't automatically bump you to that mode - you must be getting some sort of satellite signal in the house or... something...
I'm pretty sure, too, that for standard 700x23C tires it's 2096mm, so if it calculates something significantly different you'll want to zero it and try again or manually enter 2096 or figure out if your tires really are some strange proportion.
No opportunity yet to ride it outside - small matter of snow and ice and worse salt. Blah!
I do turn off the GPS when on the trainer - the default size was 2096 - I have 700x20 so that is 2086 - I'll give it a try and see how it goes - thanks for the help.

It actually does pick up a signal inside, if you let it look for long enough. I have one workout that shows my house on the GPS thing for the whole workout. Anyways, do what you need to for now, and as soon as you get a chance to ride outside, it will reset it to the exact measurement.

Anyone know how to set the wheel/tire size on the Garmin 305 with the speed/cadence sensor? Okay, I know where to set it - I just don't know how to calculate the value to enter on the custom option.
I asked Garmin tech support and they said to use auto - which is what I am using ... tho I don't really think that my average speed has jumped up to 26+ miles per hour on the trainer!
Thanks,
