Check out www.crossfit.com for awesome short burst, intense workouts for days you don't have the time for that long run, bike, or swim. The WOD's (workouts of the day) will boost your speed, threshold levels, and strength in less than 20 minutes per day. Check it out and let me know what you think....

Crossfit is intense. I did it for a summer and saw huge improvements in my functional fitness. They seem to develop a more all-around athlete with focus on body weight exercises, olympic/powerlifts and short, intense sessions. It's a bit hard to incorporate into tri training if you are following a plan because all of the runs are intervals and some of the lifts don't exactly complement triathlon training. If you aren't as dedicated to a training program and want to become a physical beast, then incorporate crossfit into your training. My roommates and close friends have started up in the past couple of months as we prepare for our Officer Basic Courses. It has a huge military and law enforcement following. I'm planning on starting it back up in June after Worlds, so I can develop a bit more strength and functional fitness before Infantry OBC and everything that follows that.

My wife does crossfit with a friend. I can't believe what an animal she is.

I did Crossfit once....and it completely ruined the rest of my workouts for the week I was so sore. I think it's great if you want to develop explosive movements and a lot of strength without bulking up....it's the perfect thing to do if you're a wrestler/kickboxer, etc. However, I think yoga and basic core exercises (planks, crunches, back exercises, etc.) are really all that a triathlete needs. My biggest concern w/Crossfit is that it's way too easy to overexert yourself and tear a calf or a hamstring or god knows what else.....could ruin a season if you're not careful.

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

So from the little I understand of crossfit is that it's adaptable. You don't have do the clean and jerks, and pull-ups (with kipping) aren't a requirement. Muscle-ups, while admirable don't necessarily equate to a triathlon performance. What you can do is modify the exercises and keep the pattern.

Here's one example:
9 exercises - 50 reps - no stopping - go for time
* Push-ups
* Chair-dips
* Dumbell Lunge-ups Rt Side
* Dumbell Rows
* Dumbell Lunge-ups Lft Side
* Hip drives
* Pikes (using Swiss ball or TRX)
* Side Plank (with Hip Lift) Lft Side)
* Side Plank (with Hip Lift) Rt Side)

The benefit of doing this kind of training is that you are working your lactate system and the more adapted your body is to THAT kind of training, the better you'll do come race day.

If you're looking to build core strength during the off-season, there is no better site than CrossFirt.

+1 to CrossFit. I've been doing this for a month now and have seen some great results. The plan is to keep with this twice a week through the start of next season and see where it gets me.

I disagree with the comment that quick explosive types of training don't benefit triathletes, especially sprint and oly distance racers.

Kind of off topic, but my last race was yesterday...a small sprint. And crossfit had a booth there where you could do a sample workout. They also raffled off some free temporary memberships. They are clearly seeing the multisport community as possible customer base. I didn't get to spend too much time checking them out, but I might look into them. Also, just an FYI if there are any TFers near Lexington, KY...crossfit just opened a brand new facility there.
