I live in a tiny town and we have two gyms, both have only weights. They dont even have showers!! The only place I can swim is at the school and they have open swim only on wednesday and friday and we cant swim on our own without a lifeguard.... after wrestling im gonna have to hire a lifeguard.
So where do you swim during the winter?

I swim at a recreational center ($25/month), but here in the Boulder area we have plenty of options. Although it does get crowded in the lanes sometimes.

I don't know what to recommend to you except to try to advocate swimming to your local community leaders and get more people interested - and more facilities on board. At my community pool the most popular time is when we have half lap swimmers and half water aerobics - 3 lane lines are in the pool and the rest is "open" for a water aerobics class. One lifeguard watches the whole group and lots of people get to take advantage of using the facility. Just a suggestion about sharing your community resources ...

I'm lucky enough to have a YMCA in our area that has 2 indoor pools. So there are always lanes available.

I swim at the local high school pools here in Arlington, and have the Pentagon as a backup since I also work there! Luckily our HS pools have community swim hours 7 days/wk.

You didn't say where your small town is. Maybe just definitely make sure you hit both of those times that it is open. Then is there a YMCA or a university within a driveable distance that in weeks when you want more swimming you could drive over once a week?

We have an adequete gym pool now, but I used to have the same problem. Is there a swim team at the school you could join? You might also consider getting a pair of stretch cords. This is what I use when traveling for work (which is often).

I normally swim at the local community center, but I find "swimmersguide.com" to be very helpful when I am out of town and looking for a pool.

You have terrible options. My sympathy. I have more pools than I know what to do with: Local school nats, big chain fitness centers, university pools (luxury of living in the 4th largest metro area in the US). In the summer, there are lake swim teams too.

You would think the school would allow you to swim if you offered to sign a waver releasing them from liability, just a thought. I swim at the 'dungeon', the basement lane pool at my local Y.

Taking myself off the DL this weekend....3 days and counting

We have a family membership at the Y which is less than a mile from my house. During the summer we have a community pool that we have a family memebership to, and that is less than a mile away as well. I have to travel a little bit in the summer to get to open water in the summer but not too far.

I used to have to travel 15 miles to get to the pool. A new health club opened up that is only 3 miles away from my house and it has a nice pool.

I swim at one of three pools --two are located within 4 miles of my house and the third is located 1 mile from my work (which is about a 15 minute drive (or a 19 mile bike ride) from my house. The three pools help ensure that I don't miss a swim workout. Plus, a short 8 mile bike ride gets me to a great, clean, clear inland lake. Gotta love West Michigan...in the summer!

For Tri4thlete, if you know other people that want to swim, group together and approach the school for more time --a lot of times the schools just want to make sure they can justify the additional staffing. Just a thought. Good luck.

Wow, I had that swimmerguide link before, but lost it in a reformat and forgot about it.

Now I see there's a Y one block from my new apartment! FRIKIN SWEET!

Brad ~ Haven't been in a while, actually. If/when I do, it's early a.m., but it's my backup. I usually use Yorktown HS first. I've been blowing off swimming this winter. Bad, I know!

I have some great options :)

I swim here:

or here:

Both are universities near me (and one of which I attend). And year round -- gotta love Southern CA winter ;)

Those pictures make me sick. I'm looking at the 6-day forecast in Provo, and the highs are all below 33. I guess it could be colder though.

Yeah well beat this Kylie.

4 lanes (3 usable due to handicapped steps in front right lane)
No lane lines to simulate open water conditions.
Kept at constant 88 degrees F to simulate overheating in wesuits.
Simulation palm trees to remind you of Kona.
20 yards long to get lots of flip turn practice.
Usually full of old people doing aquarobics and kicking and hitting you to simulate mass starts.

Oh waaah! 33 - I wish! Let's see: -10F w/c for this mornings run and then we have an ice/snow storm coming in tomorrow (up to 12 inches). 33 would be so nice.

I did say that the highs were below 33. The lows were all between 0 and 5, which was around -10 w/c. And I don't want to hear about wind chill. That's all bogus anyways. If you go outside with lots of exposed skin, then it matters. Other than that, it's just a number to make people feel like it's colder than it really is.

I lived in Quebec for 2 years, and I saw -50 C (-58 F) on the bank sign one time. They would throw wind chill numbers out there, but when every inch of your skin is covered, it doesn't really mean much.

Well I swim at the university pool. We have 2 pools. I was thinking of getting a membership at the YMCA where it isnt so crowded though so I can swimwith real swimmers. I get so frustrated during open swim when i have to share a lane with like 4 people who are really slow. I mean swim is my favorite and i wish i always had a lane to myself =X
