Hello everyone, I am new to triathlon, and have not yet down one but I am starting to train for one in late spring early summer of 2005. I am starting to get back into swimming since I haven't swam in over 4 years so getting into a pool is an achievment all by itself. I've been swimming in shorts and a sports bra, but I know it's not the "cool" thing to do. What should I buy to train for my swim? I've been looking at regular swimsuits, tri-suits, wetsuits, and something called a unitard for women. What should I get or does it all depend on what's comfortable to me. And my last question is, I've looked at the tri-suits that can be worn in and out of the water, but they have a cushion in it for the bike, can I take it out for a training swim or does it not matter if I train in it or not. Thanks a bunch.

I'm sure some of the women here will better be able to help you with advice on the swimming apparel. I usually swim in a speedo. I usually don't train in my race stuff, but I'm sure you could if you short on cash. This sport can get expensive so do what you can to get into comfortable training gear, but don't break the bank. I know TYR and Speedo make some good stuff, so maybe check out their training gear.

For swim training, I'm all about a good traditional swimsuit. Speedos are pricey (and I think they are crap)...look at thefinals.com. These are about half the price and are really good suits. If you don't care what color, check out the grab bag suits. These are a great deal ~$24. If you are looking for something to race in...I like my trisuit. Yes it has a thin biking pad in it (I haven't see one that is removeable), but they dry rather quickly. I don't train often (almost never) in my trisuit, because they are expensive and chlorine will do a number on anything you swim in. Don't worry if you don't want to invest in a trisuit. Many women just put on shorts over their suits and off they go...or you can do the whole event in a swimsuit. :)
