Rubberbands to keep shoes upright

Could someone be so kind as to explain how to use rubberbands on the bike shoes to keep them upright. I have heard this before but cannot really picture what this looks like or how to do it. Do the rubberbands break once I am pedaling or do they stay connected through the bike leg.
