Agree with the mental thing. If it gives you an edge and want to take the time to do it. For me, sweat doesn't seem to cling to me as much and I don't get as overheated during an event. I only do it two or three times a year because it takes forever to do.
Apparently not if you look at the picture of Andy Potts in this month's Triathlete Magazine while racing the 70.3 world championships. He's one hairy mo-fo.

It only takes really long the first time when you have a lot of hair to shave off. Razors aren't meant to hack through that jungle. Once you do it cleanly, it will take about 5 minutes from then on.
It makes a little bit of time difference on the bike and the swim, and makes you feel fast as everyone else said. But it also helps with crashes! Next time you slide across the pavement at 20+ mph you'll be glad to be clean shaven. Bandages are much much worse without it!
haha this is very true the reason I stopped during the off season was that it just took too dang long in the mornings. Girls you have my deepest respect for doing this well for a heck of a lot longer then I am willing to do it.

best way to cut down on a first shave is to use a pair of clippers to get the forest down to a managable length. the main benefits are a) decreased time and b) decreased number of razors.
i dont shave anymore, but have done the full body shave too many times to count due to swimming.
Why don't you guys try waxing? Yes, it hurts. But you guys all strike me as pretty tough. If a little bitty girl like me can take it, you guys should be able to handle it. Plus side? It lasts a lot longer, sometimes as much as a month. Your skin will be super smooth, no stubble. No itching. It grows in slower and finer. Also, if you try it, I recommend going to a professional the first time to get the technique down (most places are very used to waxing men these days). After that, you can buy a very cheap kit and do it yourself. C'mon...whose game?
I'm in. I'll have to do a little manscaping before I do the wax though. I saw this dude on American Idol who got all waxed, but he didn't trim before, and it looked like it was going to take all his skin off with it. I'll also have to get wife approval. She likes the hair until it spreads to my back. The sad thing is I'm only 24, so I can't imagine what my back/shoulders are going to look like when I'm 40.
I'm curious why nobody is talking about the "Nair" option?
Is this not a path worth considering?
They do sell nair for men now. I guessing same product with a different label.
Because Nair smells terrible and doesn't work (or so I've heard).
For those considering shaving you haven't tried it, definitely follow CGroth's advice and trim the hair with clippers first, or your razor will never get through. Despite using clippers the first shave will still take longer than future sessions, unless you don't do it very often.
Toni: I think you underestimate the power of a man's hair. I doubt it would take a month for my pelt to regrow :-P
I've heard horror stories about Nair, especially if you need to remove a lot of hair. Basically, it smells like burning hair, and gives you blisters and stuff. Tell me if I'm wrong if anyone has personal experience, but I've heard some pretty nasty stories.
Nair stinks really badly. It stinks up the bathroom too. And it works poorly. Also if any of you have an electric hair trimmer, like you use for a beard, that helps a lot and cuts down on the time, especially if the forest is thick.
One of the things that I have always believed in is that the physical removal of dead skin (like a crazy exfoliant) while you are shaving is one of the reasons it feels so damn good in the water. I do not know if Nair would produce the same effect. i am not man enough to try waxing. period.
Also, my hair has not grown back strange or funny after shaving. I would not recommend shaving your eyebrows though.

hahaha! Everyone tells me to shave my eyebrows because they are quite bushy...so in the summer I have a full body shave, #1 setting buzz cut from the clippers, and then large bushy eyebrows. I don't have the guts to trim them though!
You have to be very careful with the Nair. Leave it on too long and you WILL get painful chemical burns. But some hairs are tougher than others, and as a result. its removal is uneven, you have to follow up with a razor to get more resilient hairs. It does make you legs nice a smooth and last a day or two longer than shaving, IME.
I've thought about trying waxing, but it sounds so PAINFUL!
I think the advantages are definitely more hydrodynamic than aerodynamic, but both are fairly insignificant. I think if that's the only reason you'd consider shaving, you should just keep the hair.
Shaving really doesn't do anything for hydrodynamics. As soon as you get in the water all the hair gets matted against your skin anyway. Swimmers shave before big races because is takes off the top layer of skin and improves the feel in the water, which makes the stroke more efficient. This only works a couple times a year, though, so if you shave all the time it doesn't do anything...that's why swimmer girls wear pants all year long until their big meet....Sasquatch legs.
does shaving your body hair really make a difference?
No! It is a pain in the ass to shave and I refuse to do it. No reason other than cosmesis. Taking care of facial hair is enough for me. However, I agree with Tri Gator the on advantages you get and feel from shaving for big events, like Kona, are huge. It's a swimmer thing...."Shaved and Tapered" A powerful feeling!!!
Shaving your body hair makes you look more ripped! Have you ever noticed the before and after pictures for some of these weight loss adds? With the guys, it is not uncommon to see a hairy chest before and clean shave after!
The other thing, speaking as a guys who can compete with Tom Selleck in the chest hair catagory, is that I feel that I need to shave an area on my chest were the contacts for my HRM is rests. I'm not sure if is true, but it seems that the hair interfears with the contacts in some way!

Shaving exposed skin can help if you crash and get road rash, so you don't have hair all tangled up in the scab and everything.
I've also found that shaving just below the equator (or trimming, more specifically) can help to reduce chafing while running/biking.
The bad thing about shaving is, once you do it once, you have to keep doing it. If you don't shave, you can just keep not shaving.
