running shoes
I don't know if it's true or not but I wouldn't use my running shoes for anything other than running. Personally, I track the mileage on my shoes to prevent injuries. If I were walking around in them on a regular basis, I would lose track of the mileage.

Only wear them to run. When they are worn out then wear them to walk around in or cut the grass etc.
Yeah don't think it hurts there "shape" it just wears them out, they are just like car tires they have a finite lifetime.

Running only. I'm like Garen...wear 'em to kick around in, cut the grass, paint...whatever.
Your walking gait is different from your running gait and the shoe wears in different areas...so it does effect the wear pattern on the sole of the shoe.
Besides, running shoes are a tool design to do something specific. They're special. Treat them that way and they will be your friend. Abuse them and they'll bite back.

My running shoes are used solely for running until I retire them. Then they become the shoes that I use for activities that I know I will be on my feet all day but not in a workout capacity and once they become third generation they become the shoes use for yard work, etc... If for some reason they are still in decent shape after that (and they usually are) I donate them to Goodwill with other clothes that my family and I no longer wear.

Not sure where I read this but I thought it was a good idea. Maybe it was on here!
Have a new pair of running shoes ready to go at about the "half life" of your first pair.
From that point on alternate between the 2 pair.
Eventually it will become obvious to you when the older pair no longer feels like the newer pair and are shot. Time to buy pair # 3.

today i was told that if you wear your running shoes around besides for runnning, that the shoes changes shape. is this true and if so is it a bad thing.
