What are the best open water goggles for long distance open water swimming? Suggestions to be considered for buying? Thanks!

Goggles are kind of unique to each person. The pair that fits you well may not fit me well. The standard rule is if you can put them up to your eyes and get them to stick for a couple of seconds without the strap around your head, it's a good pair.

I'm using Speedo, I was using TYR but lost them. I like them both differently. The Speedos don't hurt after long swims but I think the TYR fit better. Both are in the $15-$20 range.

I did a 5-mile ocean swim in Swedes last June. They're $5. I've used them for almost 15 years now.

I too prefer the swedes. For open water I suggest the tinted ones to help with the glare from the sun.

The best ones are the ones that keep the water out of your eyes! I prefer Swedes.

I like swedes for training. After one kick in the face with them 2 years ago, I now use Speedo Vanquishers for racing and sometimes training.

I like the Barracuda foam style gogs. I found that after 70-90 minutes of continuous swimming, the speedo vanquishers started to give me a headache. It's amazing how even the 30-60 seconds rest between sets in a noncontinuous swim helps restore the bloodflow to the orbits to prevent the ache that can come from a longer swim. A 5 mile open water swim with the Barracudas was very comfy with less goggle marks than "regular" goggles.

I'm guessing facial features plays a big role in comfort as well. If your eyes are somewhat deeper set, the Barracudas are nice because they rest on your facial bones rather than suctioning down tight. They are a little pricier 25-30 dollars and aren't quite as hydrodynamic, but they last a long time and limit the Zombie-Eyed look. Good luck with your swim!

Sportsbasement has pretty decent prices on goggles. (Do you know how hard it is to type goggle without trying to type Google??)

I found the Barracuda goggles for $18...

It's all about fit. Kind of like with a bike, but a lot more.

Really all they have to do is keep the water out of your eyes. The hydrodynamic advantage you might get from one pair to another will be negligible. I'd go to a store and try on a bunch, and see which ones you can press against your eyes/face and have them stay on there. If they feel good, and fit well, they'll keep the water out of your eyes, thus serving their purpose.

The aquasphere goggles are great for the washing machine starts, with a pair of just stock speedos took a kick to the eyes got a very deep black eye (and mild concussion different story though lol), have taken a few to the head with the aquaspheres and no black eyes or anything since they fit more like a dive mask. Though in training don't like them nearly as much as my tyr goggles.

I use a few types of Speedo's. Generally what fits best and is under $20.
I have a couple pair with different tints for different lighting conditions.

Nothing to it, but to do it

i swim mostly speedos or blue-seventy but have not done too many really long distance open water swims in the ocean (lakes and rivers) and was wondering what style folks' used. i am looking at the google/mask hybrid ones - thoughts?
