Is the IronMan lottery based on a random selection of names or is it selected based on the answers people give to the questions they ask when signing up ?

I'm 99% sure it is random.

I'm 1% sure it's based on your response.

I'm assuming Wayphun is referring to Kona? I didn't even know there was a lottery for it. Even though it's a very very slim chance, it's nice they have it. Wish me luck in the lotto for 09 :)

Would I be right to say that for the unlucky male lottery losers between the ages of 30 and 34 that need to qualify for Kona, a Half-Ironman time of 4:30 might qualify, or possibly a 10:00 to 10:15 Ironman? Sounds brutal. Maybe I'll have a shot in 2077 when I turn 100.

Yes, it is completely random. I believe they now have an outside company do the actual selection. Something to do with the legality of having one and how random it is, but I don't know the details. They find the "good stories" out of the batch that is selected.

A 10:00 would give you a shot at it, but most qualifiers from Wisconsin and Florida last year were sub 10:00. I'm shooting for the 2077 Championships as well :) just need to hold my form til then...

I have in good authority that there where 7210 entrants to the 2008 Ironman Lottery, of which 1,616 were International entries, so the chances of getting a slot are about 2%, which isn't that bad in my reckoning.... much easier than qualifying - I was lucky enough to win a slot on the only two times I tried (2007 and 2008) see www.lardman.co.nz for full details....

Gives all the rest of us hope. Lardman, loved your site and it gives me even more inspiration to continue my renewed training vigor.
I have been working on getting training mixed into my daily life and so far so good. Just training for an Oly at this point, but with some mods I think I can make a run at a 1/2 and maybe just maybe a full.
