I am training for an HIM in august, I will probably follow the HIM training plan posted on this forum sometime at the end of February, for now I am just getting in some miles and swims, but I don’t know if I am training correctly on the bike. When I ride I am basically trying to maintain a constant cadence of around 90 and keeping my heart rate at or around 80%. Is this correct for now until I start a more detailed training plan?
Thanks

That is pretty typical base training - I have done that through the off-season previously, and had okay results. However, I am following a different training methodology this year and so far pretty happy with the results and the philosophy and science behind it. After some research I landed over at EN (Endurance Nation) - There was an article on the main page here at Trifuel recently: http://www.trifuel.com/training/triathlon-training/the-endurance-nation-...
They have the plans etc. for all distances. Lots of interaction with the coaches through their forums. And I think the forums are open right now for visitors.

As much Base work as you can get in is great- just make sure you include plenty of weights and/ or lower heart rate hilly rides. You still want to get stronger on top of conditioning your cardio system. Straying into Z2 and even a little Z3 is fine. Most coaches do NOT recommend that you only do Z1 for months on end.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

remember that offseason bike training and run training are not done the same way, right now is a good time to get stronger by doing some stuff such as big gear low cadence
