underwear

Ah, the 1st underwear question of the year :) You shouldn't wear underwear under your cycling shorts. I'm surprised you don't experience chaffing currently. The shorts themselves have enough support and padding that underwear just causes unnecessary friction.
In the transition, most wear the tri-shorts, thinner padded bicycling shorts so dry quickly, and so don't need to change. If you do need changing, they may provide changing areas at some races (esp. longer ones) or use an outhouse. changing in the transition is usually prohibited.
All righty then - look for me on the race circuit with just a few milimeters of lycra/spandex between me and the world!!!
I've never had a chaffing problem on the bike. Just seemed like if I was going out in the world on a bike ride that I ought to put some undies on.
Thanks - and have a Mirror Pond for me.
We triathletes live on the edge :)
You from Oregon? Had a Mirror Pond last night...
No, but for awhile Portland and Warm Springs was almost a second home as we worked on a settlement for the Pelton Round Butte hydroelectric licensing settlement downstream from you.
Beyond Mirror Pond, I've been hankering for Alaska Amber. I'd post about my attempts to brew some at home, but seems like that would be a different discussion group - maybe "Health/Nutrition" ??
I wear running briefs(yes under my bike shorts, or tri shorts) I feel more comfy with a little more support. I use a chamois cream on the undercarriage before the race or ride so I ensure I don't have chafing issues.
Nothing to it, but to do it
If you still wanted to wear some type of underwear, you could probably get away with some type of spandex short, like Nike Pro or Under Armor. It would dry out quickly but if you wanted to change, it would still leave on a layer of protection for the viewing public. I have never tried it but I don't see it causing a huge level of discomfort, other than some possible chafing, which I guess is a huge level of discomfort. I would definitely try it out before you do it.
I go with the running jock underneath the tri shorts. Makes the run more comfortable.
Embrace your triathlon commando self!!! Trishorts and some body glide and life is good. Don't worry, everyone else is dressed the same. It's one of the few times Americans go to the beach in their speedos and no one giggles at them.
Don´t listen to beads!!! He carries his GU under his briefs (thinks it will give him a sweet ride)!!! (just kidding ;) )
If you haven´t experienced chaffing yet...... you will when you do longer rides. Just enjoy your bike shorts commando!
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
Or you could just wear your whitey tighty’s on the outside. :)
WHO DOESN'T LIKE TO GO COMMANDO!!!!!
handle every situation like a dog
if you can't eat it or screw it
piss on it and walk away
I swim in black under armor (stay away from white) and then put on my bike shorts over them. I have never had any problems with chafing or anything with under armor under my bike shorts. If you're trying to shave seconds, then get tri shorts. If not, you can always just use some lycra shorts and put your cycling shorts on over them.
Another thing to keep in mind is that, in a sprint distance race, you might not even need padded shorts. You might just want to ditch your wetsuit and put on your running shorts. I'm sure many will disagree with me, but for only 12 miles, you really don't need much padding.

For a sprint distance, just race in the same clothing throughout. Find a tri short or tri suit that you can wear in each discipline and you will save quite a bit of time!
Sully's got the main point here. Regardless of whether you wear underwear, a sprint triathlon is relatively short (even for slower folks like me), I can guarantee that there won't be changing areas and you can't strip down in front of folks. It will be expected that you'll wear the same clothes throughout the entire race. Same thing up top. My first race (which was also the Culpeper Tri just like you), I swam in just a tri/sports bra, and then struggled trying to put a shirt on my wet body during T-1. Bad idea.
Grab a pair of tri shorts and a tri top (even if you're a guy, they won't let you compete topless), and wear them through the whole race.
Best of luck! It's a great course for first timers.

I had a very similar experience Tamara. I swam in tri shorts in my first race, and then attempted to put on a bike jersey in T1. Being wet makes it much more difficult. What really messed me up though was pinning my race number on the chest beforehand, because I didn't have a race belt. It took away most of the stretch in the fabric and I almost ripped the pins through the jersey trying to get the damn thing on.
This past season I got a sugoi trisuit, and loved it! http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23830&subcategory_ID...
Much easier transitions, and I felt fast and comfortable on each leg of the race. It makes the pre race bathroom room more of a pain, but I would still recommend a tri suit to anyone who isn't growing a lot of losing a lot of weight.

Actually, I carry a few GU's in my shorts. ;-)
I wear running briefs to have a little support, otherwise I tend to shift around too much if I go commando.
If you sit on the bike wrong it is pretty painful!!

It could if it pops open ;-)

Depends on where you are. Pretty much everyone goes shirtless down here. Florida was one of the most vocal in the opposition to the USATs attempting to make shirt mandatory. Any extra clothing down here in the summer is too much.
For a sprint, one could even just wear swimming jammers. I do like my tri shorts- and do not need any additional support. If youre shifting around, you likely need to pull em up higher or buy a smaller size.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Maybe you don't need additional support ;-D
If I buy them any smaller I would be singing soprano

I heard that Chris McCormack wear silk boxers under his Under Armour shorts.
Just a rumour I don't have first hand knowledge of this information

We here in AZ are in the exact same boat. If I'm doing a triathlon and its 115 out I really don't want anything extra on.
But as said before in sprint you could just swear your swimsuit through the entire thing, or you could wear a speedsuit such as:

Wow, I stand corrected on the shirt thing! I don't think I've ever been in a race where men had the option of going topless.
but, basic rule still applies. Women must wear tops. All must wear bottoms.

x2 on the black under armour. Don't want to ruin my nice bike shorts from the inside out.

Hello All. Newbie here, training for my first sprint tri in May (little pepper, culpeper, va). I've been training and gearing up, but have not been able to solve this riddle...
It seems that general courtesy requires that we not expose ourselves in the transition zone. If that is so, then how do you get your underwear on before the bike? Are you all wearing your underwear on the swim (sounds kinda soggy)? Or, not wearing any? Or, using a speedo of some sort in place of underwear (which sounds like it would chaf to me)?
In all my experience, I've always worn underwear under my bike shorts. I'm planning on getting tri-shorts but those just look like scaled back bike shorts.
So, what's up, are you all going freestyle?
Thanks.
