Indoor Trainer Noise and a Wheel Cover

In a thinly veiled attempt to rationalize buying a cover for my rear wheel, I throw this question out:

Does the majority of the noise relating to using a trainer relate to the spokes cutting through the air? Does it make it quieter to by a set of covers for my rear wheel *just* to cut down on the noise?

It seems most of the noise is generated from this. Anyone have experience using non disc rear and then disc rear to be able to compare the noise level?

I doubt that has much to do with the noise...take your bike off the trainer and just spin the wheel while its off the ground- silence. I would imagine the trainer noise comes from the internal workings of the trainer itself.

If you want to use it as a rationalization to convince the “Mrs.” that you need a rear wheel cover, I would say go ahead, but I don't think it will do anything to cut down the noise.

I usually warm up on a trainer at races, and I think my disc is actually louder than a regular wheel. I'd imagine the cover doing the same.

Your noises come from a combination of the drive system of the trainer and the vibrations caused by your bike and power input. Disc isnt goign to quite anything down. Try a rubber mat under your bike. Forget about the ones in the catalogs, head down to your local TSC and get a livestock mat in the size you need. Cheaper and thicker.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Oh, and disc covers arent that expensive. It's like $70- $80, which is pretty cheap if you ask me.

Fair enough. I had also asked my LBS and they confirmed its louder if you put them on... Darn. Well, I'll just have to come up with another reason to do it.

Thanks all
