Does Active.com have gift cirtificates???
Hi,
i was wondering if there is a big difference between training on a trainer vs. an indoor spinning bike (like at spinning class)?
This is my first winter training for my first tri and wondering what kind of indoor bike options are available. My friend mentioned that you can purchase training videos to watch while you ride, anyone have suggestions for these?
Thanks
:)
I haven't done the spinning classes, but I would guess there is a difference. I would imagine the spinning classes are more geared toward higher aerobic workouts getting your heart rate up, where most of us are focused on the lower heart rate base training phase through the winter, so a indoor trainer might be better for that. As well, It's always better to ride your bike/set-up whenever possible. Even the slightest changes in position (seat height, angle, ect) can have dramatic effects over longer rides. If you do the spinning classes, try to make notes of your position on their bike and dial it in as close as possible to your own ride.
On training videos (good Christmas gifts) here is a list of quite a few. I've used a couple of the CTS videos which I like, my dad likes the Spinerval one that came with his trainer.

hope that helps. p.s. spinning classes is definitely better than no training and I have some friends that do teach the classes, but he's more of a pure cyclist focusing on fast twitch sprinting muscles.
I have a trainer and rollers. For some reason I am enjoying my rollers more this off season because I am less tempted to get my heart rate up vs just base training. Plus I move around a little bit on my rollers vs being so stationary, which hurts after a while. With rollers you have to think and pay attention which makes time go faster to me.....it's more like real riding.
I do a spinning class every Thursday over my lunch hour and it is much different than riding on my own bike on a trainer. As I see it....
Spinning Class:
> Bikes not made for people 6'-4" and above like myself
>Obviously much different setup than my road bike
>Some of the bikes are kind of rickity (even at a new 24 Hour Fitness)
>However, FUN workout, gets the HR up and lots of sweat!!!
Indoor Training:
>Get to use your own bike, duh.
>Ride your own pace
>Or pop in a Spinnervals tape/DVD (MUCH harder than a spinning class!)
Both are good workouts. It just depends on what your goal is for that day.
So I'll do the spinning on Thursday just for fun.
And then ride the trainer at home on Sunday for some base training.
Oh yeah, Christmas wish list???
How about an IPOD for those long indoor trainer rides :)

Aerobars and tri shorts. Anyone who wants to mail them to me, post a reply and I will send you my address :-).
On the videos, I have the CTS Mountain Bike video that I use with my Fluid 2 trainer. It focuses on intervals and is really good. It is definitely better than no riding at all and it has improved my outdoor rides significantly.
Happy holidays to everyone!

not my two front teeth, but just a good starter bike. been training for about a month and a half for my first tri which i hope to do in early summer, depending on my progress. im kind of tired of indoor bikes and the gym. i really want to get out and have some scenery.
by the way, TriTimKC, what do you ride, im about your size?
I want to be able to swim better!!
I am in the pool twice a week and have yet to break the 400m mark, I think I need lessons.
All I want is my legs to heal, and the orthotics I'm getting shortly after Christmas to work (haven't heard many success stories :( ) I want to be able to run....
Well, since this will be the start of my first triathlon training year (Which i started training for about 2 months ago) I believe that the winter may hampper some of my attempts to pursue activity outdoors, unless properly clothed......So, I believe that some nice winter running gear may be in order for this year. PLus, you know, like everybody else, I got to look good while I'm doing it. So, do they make any nice winter clothes that dont weigh you down and make you bulky?

new wheels.
I'm struggling to find a set to ride on and I have seven of them! Some have flat spots, some have broken spokes, and I'm not using the tubulars for winter riding! Methinks, I'd best do some maintenance.

What are you guys wishing for this Christmas? New bike, clothes, a coach :)
Me I'm wishing for some warm clothes. Got some snow the last couple of days and it's cold. Fairly new to the snow/colder weather so am just going to ask for some cycling pants, good weather resistant jacket. Oh, and as always, some cash to help pay for racing and travel :)
