New Shoes before Marathon
Here is my two cents. I got a new pair of Asics aGel Cumulus about two weeks before a half ironman and the first week of runs in the new shoes were simply miserable to adjust to. In the short runs they were fine but after 8 miles it became a problem. and I was getting blisters. I called the shoe store complaining but I am so damn persistent that instead of just getting it over with I kept running in them and they have broken in nicely and run marathons in them now. It took me at least 50+ miles before I started to feel comfortable in them. With that said I would suggest you run your marathon in the shoes you are comfortable and have been training in. Discomfort in the knees is probably due to running so much training for your marathon, I am doing the Disney marathon this weekend and I will be resting three days prior to the race, it works for me to loosen everything up. Now you definetly need new shoes if you have been running in them for four years. Good luck on your first marathon.

Thanks for your two cents, and good luck in your race. I haven't been wearing the same pair of shoes for four years, but have worn the same model :)
In general, it's a good idea to not wear new shoes for a race. Personally, I have no problem doing it but I think most people do. This is a tough call because old shoes could be just as bad. I guess it really depends on whether you have problems with new shoes and how much pain your experiencing in your old shoes.

When I have a shoe style that works great for me, I don't feel like there is any break in period. They fit well from day 1. And I have done a race in new ones.
I used to wear Brooks Adrenalines, and didn't feel like it took too long to break-in a new pair. I would say if you are really comfortable with that model, you shouldn't have any problems with it, but it depends on you. Do you tend to blister easily? Do you get frequent discomfort in your feet? I think that some people just have more sensitive feet than others and thus take longer to get used to a pair of shoes.
I'd say get them. Hang up the old ones, and do your last couple of runs in the new ones. If something is "wrong" with the new shoes, you should feel it right away, and you are going to know because you KNOW these shoes. If they feel similar to others you've had, you're probably good. And if something isn't quite right (just go with your gut instinct) you always have the old ones.
Best of luck!

I've run long races in new shoes..like out of the box new...but I know my feet well. Most of the time it works...sometimes it doesn't and I lose a toenail or get a blister. Really only one way to find out.
Good luck and let us know how the race goes!

If I'm going to the same exact shoe, it's never been an issue.
I agree with the majority. I would get at least 30 or 40 miles in your shoes before you run a marathon in them. It is a good habit to pick up a new pair 2 or 3 weeks before the race and break them in before the race. There is nothing worse than getting blisters in a key marathon.
I buy a few pairs of the same shoes well before hand. I run a while in a pair and then try to rotate the newer pair in so I can get some mileage on them.
However, I have worn brand new shoes on occasion, but I was okay because I am using a model I am comfortable with right out of the box already.
Good Luck!!

My first marathon is coming up Sunday (Mobile, Alabama... anyone else?). My shoes are almost ready to be replaced. I noticed about a week ago, but figured I could just replace after the race. So the question is, should I pick up a new pair, run the next 2 days (~5 miles) in them, and then wear them for the marathon, or would it be better to stick with the ones that are wearing down? How many miles does it take to break in a new pair of shoes? A couple things: I've noticed some slight discomfort on my knees the past couple of weeks. I thought it was running on a bunch of snow and ice (Iowa), but it could be the shoes as well. Also, I've worn Brooks Adrenaline (my current shoe) for the past... 4 years or so, so a new pair shouldn't be a huge switch. Your thoughts?
