Tension on Kinetic Trainer
you should spin the lever 2 full turns from after the tire is just touching and I would buy a Cont. trainer tire
You are right, you basically want to tighten it enough to not have the rear wheel slip. Tightening it more than that actually does make it slightly harder (not that this is a good thing) only because you are compressing the tire more. The more it is compressed, the harder it is to spin because it has to deform the tire that much more as it rotates. Also, it slightly increases the pressure inside the tire because there is less of a volume for the same amount of air. So the moral of the story is that you don't want to overtighten it, but just get it to where the tire won't spin.
Also, remember to pump up your tire to the same pressure before each use.

Thanks. Those comments all make sense.

Have now about 8 rides in on my Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Really enjoying having it in the house etc, love the pain, you know the drill.
Question is: How much tension do I ideally want on the back tire? Seems to me you want basically enough tension so the wheel doesn't slip when you pedal, but more is probably just deforming your tire.
Am I missing something? Having more tension doesn't shift the power profile or anything does it?
