Hello everyone,

I hope to do a Ironman someday, but can only run about 15 to 18 miles a week due to an old knee injury. Swimming and cycling is no problem. My question is has anyone here ever trained for a Ironman on low running miles?

Thanks

I'm no expert (one IM under my belt), but if you can do the swim in 1.5h, the bike in 6.5h, add 30 min for comfortable transitions and gulping something down, that still leaves you 8 hours to WALK the marathon and still be an Ironman. I trained on 25-30 mi/week avg (some weeks longer), but my training partner had ankle problems and did far less (though still managed to put at least a few weeks of 25-30). He's strong in the water and on the bike and had no problem finishing. Good luck!

The secret of Ironman, if you're only looking to finish, is that it's not that hard. Training is hard, and it would be good to have some running under your belt but if you can't manage a full running program...you can still finish.
I'm a mid-pack IM'er at best...after my first one I got off the bike with 9 hours left...enough time to run a 50 miler! This past year (My third IM) I suffered on the bike and still managed the run in 5 hours.
And finally...in 2005 I volunteered at IMLP and watched as Desiree Ficker and another pro woman (who's name I can't recall) WALKED the entire marathon in 7 hours after having great swims and good bikes....they finished in 13 hours.
Go get it!

I just finished my first IM in Dec-07 (IM Western Australia) and had to nurse my way through the run training. I never did more than 30 miles in a week but probably averaged 20-25 pw for the 5 months before. Then a good dose of plantar faciitis hit me with 3 weeks to go. I only did one more run before the race and that was only about 5 miles. Still managed a 3:58 run split with 11:03 hrs overall. I think the running 'rest' did me no harm and probably some good!

I reckon one of the keys to a good IM race is to ensure training consistency over a fair period of time. If you can only do about 18miles a week, it is less than ideal, but still quite do-able I reckon. Make sure you make some weeks a solitary 18mile run and do more on the bike and you will finish and be an Ironman too! Good luck - it is a real blast!

I did. My last IM (CDA) I ran about 10k and walked the rest. My bike and run were both 6 hours and I still finished in the 14 hour range.

Ya, I think you can do it. I did IronMan Wisconsin 2007 and did a full IronMan training plan. Most of my time was spent on the bike and in the water -- not a whole lot of running. I would guess that most weeks were below your range -- outside of a few days here and there.

I'd be more concerned with the knee on the bike.

Good luck...
