Foot Supports Question
I have had the perpetual pebble. It stinks. It is a bruised metatarsal or something of the like. I went to the podiatrist and he made me a bandage that supported my arch and the ball of my foot everywhere but the pebble. I couldn't run on it for 3 weeks and I had to keep my foot support from getting wet, so that stunk.
I would get better insoles for your cycling and running shoes, but I don't think you need anything fancy. I just got some specialized insoles for my bike shoes because I felt the pebble coming on, and they seem to be working great. I would also focus on calf stretching. Having tight calves can pull the wrong things in the foot. When I wake up I put my feet off the bed and do 10 circles to the left, 10 to the right, and then spell the alphabet. After that I get up and do normal stretching. I know it sounds weird, but it helps. Good luck.
Sorry to hear about not being able to run, that is a bummer.
I have never had any need for any orthodics and have never researched them. so my advice is totally uninformed. Looking at the link, 9 out of 10 people would recommend these insoles to a friend while 8 out of 10 said that there feet felt better after using them, so they at least seem to have good reviews unless the founder of the company is padding his stats.
I am not entirely sure how custom insoles are made, but I am sure that it has to be using a similar method (taking a mold of your feet). What typically happens with stuff like this, and using custom insoles as an example is that the custom made insole are really expensive, so a company creates a cheaper alternative to achieve the same thing. Typically the cheaper alternative does work, but usually not as well as the more expensive option. I did not see a price on the website, but depending on the price difference these might be worth a try. Also, I would just make a phone call to your doctor’s office and ask them if they have heard of these and if they would recommend them in your case. If you have a good doctor who has a sports background, they should be able to answer your question quickly and honestly. A phone call for something like this should not cost you anything and they should know if these would work in your case. I wish you the best of luck in your quest for pain-free workouts.

I realized lately that I have some problem with my left foot. In fact I always have, but somehow it got worse lately. I have rheumatoid arthritis and the first joints that were diagnosed were my metatarsals (ball of the foot joints). The joints were damaged, and I can do limited activity. Some of you already knew that I can't run. I would love to, but my docs won't allow it. Fortunately, swimming and biking are the best sports for me, so I do relays and I am planning on doing aquabiking competitions for the future.
Anyway, last year I tried the elliptical as a complementary, and it went well until I spent over 30 minutes on the elliptical. My toes started to get numb and tingling. So I abandoned the elliptical. It seemed ok, but lately I've had that weird sensation in the ball of my foot, as if sometimes, when I put my weight on my left foot there was a pebble rolling under it... Dunno if any of you have experienced that before, but it doesn't really hurt, it's just weird.
I did a bit of research and found out that my symptoms were pointing to metatarsalgia (this is not a condition, but rather a group of symptoms). My metatarsals being damaged, this is far from being a surprise. I've looked into the different options, and the best is without a doubt custom-made inserts (read tons of $$$). I'm already using off-the-shelf support insoles and it's obviously not helping.
I was trying to find an alternative and came up with SOLE (http://www2.yoursole.com), an insole you bake for 2 minutes and step on it to shape it to your feet.
I'm aware that my problem is quite specific, but did any of you try that type of insole? Is it worth it? Is it even comparable to orthotic custom-made insoles?
