I received a $50 gift certificate to a local sporting goods store and am thinking about buying some new biking shoes. What do you suggest? I would like to stay around $100.

Here's our shoe section sorted by price:

Looks like the Lake or Shimano might be a good choice. Not sure what brands that shop would carry. But usually you can't go wrong with Shimano or Specialized...

I agree with Tribro, you can't go wrong with Shimano shoes. Depending on your sporting good store, the Shimano SH R-151L road shoe could be in your price range. They make it in a standard and wide version. This is not a tri shoe but it's still a really good shoe. For a tri shoe, I'd recommend the SH TR-50 but that's more in the $175 range.

I've had Carnac, Shimano, and even Sidi and Specialized.
Right now and for the last two years I've been using Specialized Trivent.
LOVE 'em. Very comfy. Stiff and with a big toe box, so numb toes have become a thing of the past for me. They're wearing well too...

I have the Simano TR-02s. Love em. I tried on the Trivents, but I needed a half size larger and they didnt seem to be willing to order them for me. They seemed like great shoes, tho.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Here's another vote for Specialized shoes. Their BG makes for good knee alignment. Good luck with your purchase!

I don't know how new to triathlons or biking you are, but another consideration might be what type of shoes you want -- road, triathlon or even mountain bike (which can work for all three). I like Shimano and Sidi.
