Xterra Question

I recently noticed that an Exterra series triathlon is coming to my area (Finally) and I have always thought it would be cool to do one of these races. I don't know very much about these types of races and was hoping to get a few questions answered by people who have done one of these events or who know more about them than I do.

1) My mountain biking skills are fairly basic; I own a decent mountain bike but have never really done anything super technical. Are the courses set up to be fairly easy off-road courses, or are they fairly technical.

2) How many people typically participate in each event. I know this probably varies from event to event, but on average how many people participate in a typical event.

3) A majority of my training is going into training for HIM's and a Marathon and I would be doing this race more for fun and variety than anything else. Is this type of event going to take any more training than just a couple of trail runs and a couple trips out of the mountain bike to get ready for.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Sweet. I want to do one as well, but the one that was in my neck of the woods is gone.

I think the terrain varies quite a bit. I know of some pretty technical ones and ones that aren't so bad. Best bet is to ride the course a few times before the race.

Not sure about participation numbers, but i think far fewer than a normal Olympic distance race, probably so for a new event at least.

You're training sounds fine. Ya, ride the mtn bike and run trails just to build some technical proficency and comfort off road, but if you're looking to have fun that training should be fine. If you want to throw down :) you might work on shorter distance speed work as your heart will more than likely be elivated if it's a technical/hilly course.

good luck. sound fun!

I haven't done any Xterra events yet (have an Xterra off road 10K in a coupla weeks), but I have done some adventure races and they are a BLAST! Definitely go out there to have a good time, especially for your first one. I can't give you any info on the Xterra races, but the ones I've done, we're good for all levels. There were some real technical parts, and a lot of people just walked and pushed there bikes - no big deal.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.
