Base training and swim workouts

I have been doing some reading on base training including the thread that currently is being commented on in this forum, but I wanted to ask a slightly different questions with regards to base training. I would think that you would want to do base training in all three disciplines and increase your distances as you go. However, what do you do if you don't have access to a heated swim facility. I live in the south and expect water temps to at least be doable with a wetsuit by ~March but was curious how others handled this (if anyone). I.e., do you concetrate on the run and bike and then make up some of the swim workouts later or what?

I treat my swim training almost completely separately from my bike/run training. I also don't do base for swimming. On the other hand, I started racing 17 years ago, so I can get into respectable swim shape in about two months. If you can't swim, doing some upper body work until March should be fine. Stretch cords are your friend for dry-land swim training.

Ditto--- in the past I have always waitd 6 weeks out for my IM to do anything. That being said, I have my endless pool now and since I cannot run (stress fracture) , I have been jumping in for 30 min-1hr every day. Mostly "straight" swimming. I will start doing some speed work stuff in a few months.

This year will be one of the few years where I incorporate swimming into base. In most prior years, I waited until 2 months out from race day to start swimming.

If you don't have access to a pool, stretch cords and a vasa trainer could be options. As far as base training for swimming goes, getting in and swimming 2 to 4000 at one time straight at an aerobic pace with excellent form is a great thing to be doing this time of year.

That poor guy. I came up with an idea similar to this guy. Never acted on it though. I looked at a lot of patents. Lots of stuff out there like it. He looked like such a fool. He needed to add some resistance to the machine.
I think Vasa has this market nailed down.
