I'm looking to do a spring marathon, so I can focus more on tri's in summer & fall. Trying to qualify for Boston. This will be my 4th marathon (not counting IM), and would love some fresh training books (all the ones on my bookshelf are from the 80's/early 90's)

So....what are your favorite books for marathon/distance running??

TIA!

Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger and Douglas. It is an easy read with a variety of plans based on 12,18,or 24 weeks of training and you can also choose from maxing out at 50, 70 or 100 miles per week.

It helped me to qualify for Boston after 5 failed attempts. I have used it for the last 5 years and highly recommend the book. I believe it is available through Amazon. Good luck qualifying.

I don't know about his books but Hal Higdon's plans are pretty good. He has free plans and interactive plans which cost. I've only used the free.

I followed one of his plans with a slight modification to a marathon pr.

i used hal higdon's online plan as well. his advanced program got me to boston this year. the website offers a few different programs depending on your experience. higdon keeps it fairly simple and thats how i like it.

Thx, everyone! I'm getting a few of these from the library to see which one I like best. I'm also looking into the FIRST training book. I think the ra-ra testimonials will be dorky, but am very interested in their 3-runs/week training plan (it relies on a lot of x-training, which I figure is good for triathletes)

I'm using the FIRST program a few times before and really like it. The paces specified are very difficult, but they have been effective! I also have had less injuries since starting the 3+2 program. Of course, being a triathlete it's always more like 3+7. But whatever.
