Tri Suit???
If there is a full IM race along with your half, the changing tents may only be available to the full IM racers.
I'd recommend applying some Body Glide to the areas you are having problems with.
It's much cheaper than a tri-suit.

You're gonna need to do some searching around to figure out the right gear for you - try different things. My onw rule is this" NEVER eat, use or wear something on race day that you haven't eaten, used or worn in your long training beforehand... good luck!
I haven't seen changing tents at 1/2IM. I think it's just an IM thing. Regardless of running irritation, I suggest at least a tri short for 56 miles of biking. At least I need padding at that distance.
Elimating irritation...sometimes just changing brands, styles, etc will do. Body glide, as mentioned above, is good stuff as well.
I wouldn't even consider doing a Half IM without a tri short(unless you're going to change in between each event). Today's tri shorts are very comfortable (in my opinion) for wearing from the swim to the run. I would still apply a little Body Glide for protection, but these new suits are fast drying and moisture wicking. I use DeSoto's Power shorts and I just purchased there 4-pocket tri short to use this season in my Half IM and IM Wisconsin(along with some other shorter tris). My advice would be to purchase a pair of tri shorts and make sure you train in them before race day to get a feel for them. Good luck and happy racing. :)

Thanks for everyone's help. I have since found out that both half IMs I am doing do not have changing tents. Looks like I will be investing in some tri shorts!
Thanks again,

I wear the 5 pocket de soto Tri suit - it is excellent for Sprints and International distance - however not sure about the half IM. One thing I was considering for this option is to wear the tri suit for the swim and then simply pull a pair of cyucling shorts over the tri suit if I wnated the extra padding. Of course you should try this out on one of your training rides first to see if you need the extra padding and see how well if works with respect to irritation - I agree with the other guy about Body Glide - apply liberally where needed and your problem will go away.
John,
I have changed shorts standing beside my bike, even at Olympic distance tris, by wrapping a towel around my waist. No problem.
I note you are a beginner, besides if you weren't, you probably wouldn't be asking this question. Unless you expect to scorch the course and every second in transition matters, take the time to change if it will make your bike or run more comfortable and more enjoyable. Chances are, that will be more important than suffering through the pain of chafing because you just had to save 30 seconds.
Unless you plan to give the top fifty guys a scare, a minute here and there won't matter.
Anyway I always like to take it easy in my first race or two at a new distance, sandbagging a little makes setting PRs down the road a wee bit easier. :)

PoC,
Thanks for the tip on how to change in the transition. I have no plans of chasing down the guys at the front. In fact, the 1/2 IM in April will be my first 1/2 IM. I really just want to be able to finish the thing and still be able to walk. I was really hoping there would be changing tents but the 1/2 in April and the other 1/2 I am going to do in June do not have tents.
I am going to buy some tri shorts (I think I am going to get the Orca Elite shorts) and try them out.
Thanks again,
John

I have a gear question. I can run 3-4 in my knee length Speedo shorts with no irritation. However, if I run 5 miles or more in the Speedo's, I get irritated. This is not a problem on a training run or in a sprint tri, but I am planning to do 2 half IMs next year. Do half IMs usually have changing tents? If not, should I put out the money and get a tri suit? Can I swim, then bike 56 miles, then run 13 in a tri suit without getting irritated?
Thanks,
John
