So I'm going to dive in and get the garmin 305 finally but was wondering what the best places were to buy one online at a relatively good price.

Here is where I bought mine. Great Price and they delivered very quickly. I am not sure what else you mean buy best places but if it is great price, great delivery, this place will suffice.

When the 605/705 starts shipping there will likely be a flood of used 305's on eBay and message boards. Might be able to snag a good deal from a geek who needs the latest and greatest. If you want it now, it's certainly worth the $200 you can get it for, though.

I have a 305 (and love it, BTW) and would love to upgrade to 705 for power, but the expense of the unit plus power is simply too much, so I'll be keeping mine ;)

I thought the 605 and 705 were portable GPS units for navigations with fitness features and not portable/watch units like the 305. I don't understand how the new units will affect the 305 since they are different, but I could be wrong.

It's more the other way around - the 605 and 705 are fitness units with navigation as a bonus. I think very few people actually even care too terribly much about that. From what I've heard, most people seem to say they would occasionally use it, but it's not that useful. The exciting part of the 705 is power measurement.
Also worth noting that they have larger, color screens than the 305 while still claiming better battery life, which was a major issue with 305's, especially the early ones.

What I wish Garmin would make is a more truly multisport computer. I've not played with the Forerunner series, but I still feel like the Edge is too cycling oriented and the Forerunner is too running oriented. If they folded a few more of the running features (like switching sports profiles on the unit, foot pod) into the 705 I'd have bought one in a heartbeat. Some sort of swimming support would be cool too, but not likely.

Having looked at the 705. I am not sure where to strap that giant piece of equipment. That thing is too huge to be a good running tool and a giant distraction on the bike, imo. Now if Garmin ever comes up with a 305 that I can use while swimming and I can still wear it like a watch....I will buy that.

The price of the 305 is plummeting! $186 now on Amazon.

It probably has something to do with the announcement of the 405 coming out, so you can either get the new tech or the old great model for half price.
