buying bikes on the internet???
I would look at Craiglist. You can get a used bike for a reasonable price and you can "see" it before you buy it.

I was in the exact same boat as you a little over two years ago. I purcahsed my first road bike through ebay in pieces and put it together myself. I gained an increadible amount of understanding about bikes. I would recommend it to anyone.
On the point of bikesdirect, I have never dealt with them but getting free service for the life of the bike seems like a good deal. If the guy at your LBS seems like he is an honest person, I would ask him to recommend who he would deal with because from the sounds of it he has dealt with a few of these places in the past. Good luck with your search and feel free to ask us any questions on if a bike is a good deal or not.
I bought my tri bike on Ebay in 2006 and have been very happy with it. I did buy it new (it was still in the original package) so I didn't have any issues with bent frame, parts not working, etc. I also got a very good deal. The bike retailed for $1600 in 2005, and I got it for $900.
I would recommend getting a professional bike fit if you do this. I spent $100 for a fit and it was money well spent.
Also, you probably don't want to get anything less than Shimano 105 on the components.
both of my roommates purchased used bikes at our LBS. fortunately we have 6-7 shops within a 30 minute drive so they were able to shop around and find the cheapest one that fit their wants.
one of my roommates visited the shop near his home almost every day after work and talked to the employees and scoured their used bike inventory. he got to be good friends with a few of them and they helped find him a really good deal on his first road bike ($400 for a 2 season old Specialized Allez that had only a few hundred miles on it!!)
i bought my tri bike from a LBS. i'd say its much easier buying a bike from a shop, ESPECIALLY if he is offering free lifetime labor on the bike. but make sure you get that deal in writing, cause unless that guy is the owner, his word isnt worth much and he may not be an employee there for as long as you own that bike.
i've had a few kinks in my new bike, some that i caused, some that i didnt, and it was nice being able to go back to the shop and get free repair.
the LBS that i purchased my bike from is more like a walmart then your normal bike shop, but it was nice knowing that they can and will fix my bike either for free or relatively cheap. and i guess for that, it almost offsets some of the mark-up in buying a new bike.
My Brother bought his bike off of eBay (QR) and so did I. Now I know I wrote I got a Specialized Tarmac for Christmas but I ended up going with a Roubaix as it was more comfortable to me and it will only double as my tri bike for this season. I found mine at a BS in Northern CA and I am in Utah. I did pay $70 dollars for my LBS to fit me and then went looking for my bike. I got a brand new 2007 Specialized Roubaix Pro that last year retailed between $3800 and $4100 for $2k. Now I want to support my LBS just as much as anyone but I want to support my wallet more. I will go to the shop for components and the likes but when I can save upwards of a grand for a bike, well I say shop the internet.
As for Shimano Components it goes in descending order
Dura-Ace
Ultegra
105
Tiagra
Sram is
Red
Force
Rival
Campagnolo is
Record
Chorus
Centaur
Veloce
Mirage
Xenon
Now Like someone mentioned above, For shimano I would not drop below 105, for sram I think all of their groups are good. Campy I would stick to Veloce or above. But I am not a super expert, This is my personal experience and that of some friends with pretty good credentials.
Good Luck!!!
Here's the bike that the guy suggested was the cheapest I should remotely bother with.....it's a windsor wellington....I don't know anything about that brand so that doesn't mean anything to me
I'm on a ridiculously tight budget so the $300 this costs is about as high as I can go without not buying a bike for a year.

Yup... that's a $300 road bike. This is the bike we're talking about right? ...

tsilcyc,
yep, that's the one I'm thinking about.......was the "that's a $300 road bike" stating that is was indeed worth $300 or joking about the level of inferiority $300 can buy you compared to everyone else..... :)
I currently don't have bike and am training on the stationary bike at my apartment complex......I'm working hard at it but know that nothing beats an actual bike
as it is though, if I can't save up enough by March I have two options......1)ride my sisters mountain bike (not completely free of embarrassment) or swim faster than someone with a cool bike and take theirs before they get to transition (not completely free of illegality)

I'm not judging the bike, it is what it is. I think your $300 could be better spent on something used which is what I suggested in the beginning of this thread.
$300 used is probably going to be pretty close to $300 used in 6 months. $300 new is going to be $150 used in a month.

I agree with Tsilcyc. If there is one thing that holds truw in purchasing a bike it's that you getwhat you pay for. And I would bet that the shop owner you're dealing with is going to give you free labor onparts installs because he realizes how often you break something or be looking to upgrade.
I would scour Craig's list and e-bay. Join a localbike or tri club. A lot of us that have been around for a while have that old bike lying around that we're just looking to loan out or sell.
Good luck.
in response to your advice I have now become the highest bidder on a trek road bike
I probably wont win the bid but you never know, and it's fun to wonder whether I'll have a bike on tuesday :)

Goodluck!
I just got my first road bike everyone......it's a panasonic (wierd huh) but it was $75 at a garage sale and I took it out on the local trail and was able to average 18 on it so I guess its ok to start off with....
thanks so much for the help
also, I'm gonna replace the tires and tubes soon....and then I'm imagining clipless pedals.....after that, whats the important upgrade ?(the seat feels fine)

Definitely check craigslist. There are a few reasons.
1. You can see and ride the bike before you buy it.
2. Used bikes are much cheaper than new bikes.
3. You don't have to pay tax (this is often overlooked, but tax can hurt you).
EDIT: I just read your last post, and remembered you from another thread, so good luck with the Panasonic. I hope you get plenty of good miles. I also hope you get a great idea of what you really want when you have a little more money to spend.
"The melting point of wax means nothing to me": Thrice
Yeah, I went out and did 13 good miles the first day on the bike (avg 18) which is slower than good cyclists but i was still proud of myslef........then I got a little macho and went for a 30 mile ride yesterday......not brilliant......i didn't realize how sore i still was from the seat and man i could barely move the last 10 miles
I've read good things in the blogs about treks equinox and cervelos tri series.......but I've also head a lot of people recommend staying with true road bikes.....as cycling does not interest me i don't know that i should go that route

I went to my LBS and the selection they had didn't even stretch south of $600 and since my budget is lower he said I could go to some website and pick one out....then he would buy....then he would give me free labor on all installs for parts for the life of the bike (I guess he makes money by buying through some dealer discount?)
anyway, I'm worried about buying over the internet something that I haven't seen in person.....does anyone have any experience with bikesdirect.com ? especially the cheaper end of what they sell......do they have a good rep?
It seems like I might be able to save some money there but I'm so ignorant that when they start listing components I get lost (still getting used to what shimano line is good, better, best)
thanks for the help
