Diets
I've done it before. It blows. I'm back up to my usual 5-6000 daily calories, though. :)

Not fast enough.
I first got into triathons as a way of losing weight. I have lost 95 lbs. to date and am finally done with the dieting. I enjoy not having to diet and train much more than training while on a diet.
Around the 2nd week of December I decided to try a diet, but I don't think it's the type of diet that you are referring to. The hardest part so far is finding foods with the amount of protein that it suggests. The second hardest part for me is finding a way to eat 6 meals a day. I'm aiming for 3k calories a day, which is nice. When I tracked what I was eating in the summer, it was only about 2500 - 2700 calories per day.
I know most people think of a diet as a calorie deficit. I think that's bad if you're training hard. You need a good supply of fuel for energy during workouts, and to repair muscles between workouts.
I'm curious if Iron Dan changed his eating habits when he started triathons to lose 95 lbs. I lost 15 lbs between June and Aug when I started training for triathlons, but I didn't change what I ate, I just worked out more. Since Aug I haven't lost anything, but I could stand to lose another 10 - 15.
I lost about 30 lbs in the last year, training for a marathon... I would say that I didn't really change the quantity of food so much as I changed the quality of it. After I started training, I stopped eating fast food, and drinking soda... But, overall, I would say that I eat MORE now than I did before I started training.
Obviously, I try to regulate the amount of food I eat based on how much training I will be doing (not very much right now), but you have to make sure you are getting enough food, or you are going to start feeling really fatigued.
5000-6000 calories gator?? holy cow im only 17 and i didnt even eat that much during my summer training sessions! During the summer and fall I probably averaged 3000-3500 calories or so :) good times

It's quite possible that you are nowhere near as insane as Trigator...

HOW AWESOME Iron Dan!! :)
I think it all depends on your goals. I'm trying to shed a bit of my Starbucks Belly so I'm a bit more conscious of what food goes in my mouth, but probably not as mindful as I should be. Some habits (sweet tooth) are a bit more challenging to modify.
That being said, I believe that your diets/nutrition programs has to be compatible with the sport you're doing. Endurance sports and bodybuilding, for example, probably don't play well together. I would imagine the same would go for triathlon and wrestling. There are some fairly extreme diet "tricks" that you can use to drop several pounds for the weigh-in and the bounce back up 24 hours later. I'm not advocating that approach, but just use it as an example of how creative people are and how amazingly adaptable the body is.

I was eating more like 8000 when I was a swimmer. :D

8000? When I was racing sled dogs in the Yukon I used to ingest 10,000 as 10% chocolate bars and 90% caribu blubber.
But on the lighter side... being very lean is great for both sports. But watch out for the dehydration that many wrestlers use for that last minute effort to reach alower weight class. I had a team mate who spent the first night of the state tournamnet in the hospital with an IV drip because he hadn't taken in any water or food in days.
I've been a varsity wrestler since ninth grade and have definitely learned my lesson about cutting water weight, as a tenth grade I had to cut hard to make 103 and I cut alot of water weight. But now as a senior, i've been doing it smart, I cut ten pounds to get to 112 this year but I started losing weight in october. Triathlon training has really really helped me maintain my weight :) Alot of kids in the wrestling room think im psycho for running 12 miles on the weekends :D
psycho for sure. But I'm guessing you're not winded in over time!
God I miss wrestling.

How many of you triathletes are on a diet while training for triathlons? I am in wrestling (high school) and it's rather difficult being on a diet yet training for triathlons i'm used to summer training and being able to eat :) Just wondering who all does this
