Hurting feet

I have participated in triathlons and duathlons for several years at the sprint distance. This year I've decided to do a marathon. I went to RunTex and got fitted for new shoes. After about 5 miles my left foot on the inside of my ankle gets a pain and it takes a few more miles for my right foot to start hurting bad to where I have to start walking more. Any suggestions?

Sounds like they're the wrong shoes for you. I'd go back to RunTex and tell them what's going on.

Did you train in them or just wear them for the marathon? I have had several GREAT pairs of shoes in the past that hurt like a bitch for my first 5 or 6 runs.

I know what you mean, but I would think that the pain would be more in the foot itself, or the heel...

Isn't the OP saying that the pain is on the inside of the ankle?

Maybe I'm confused as to exactly where the pain is starting. It could have nothing to do with the shoes at all. Here's a picture of the foot... where's it hurt?

Thanks for the help. According to the chart the pain is about where Deltoid ligament is. Especially on the inside of the left foot. I've trained in these shoes for several runs now and when I get to about 5/6 miles I start experiencing pain. I have been running now since 2003 but only sprint distances which is around 3 miles and the pain is not there. It's only after longer miles.

BTW - The marathon is Feb. 17 and I've been adding 1 mile to my long run on Saturdays.

If you are only used to running 3 miles then it is normal, for me at least, to feel discomfort after 6 miles. Maybe your foot isn't conditioned for that distance? I run 3 miles 3 nights per week. But every other week I do a 1 hour 7.5 mile run. It usually takes my ankles and knees a few days to recoup. Maybe it isn't the shoes and just your feet that need to get accustomed to doubling your distance. If you are used to only running 3 miles I don't think any shoes will make you feel great in a marathon.

I am not sure that any of us are going to be able to tell you one way or another whether or not it's the shoes. My instinct is to say that it's probably not the shoes that are bothering you. When the pain starts, does it continue for the entire run, or does it subside after a while? What is your longest run currently? I know that you are building up about a mile a week, but that could be a little fast for you. I how many miles are you up to now? When did you start building?

Building too fast can lead to quite a lot of unexplained pain in unexpected areas.

The pain is not there until I have run about 5/6 miles. Then I start feeling it only when I run. If I walk a bit it is not there. Start running again and it is there. When I'm through with my workout it is not there.

I have been training for the marathon since November where I started with a 5 mile run since I was used to running 3/4 miles on a regular basis. I ran 12 miles Saturday and it was rather painful especially under the ankle on the inside of my left foot. The right foot was just starting to give me pain.

Maybe I just need more of a building period for my muscles to support the long runs.
