Found my first newbie question
When I'm riding for training I keep that stuff in my jersey pockets (+cell phone, ID.. that's about all I usually take)
Obviously not a good solution for race day, though. I've seen people just tape them to the seatpost or under the saddle with electrical tape. I'm thinking that's going to be my strategy this season because I don't really like the under-the-saddle wedge I have and don't feel like trying to find a new one.
There are special gadgets to hold stuff behind the saddle. I know XLab makes one. I'm skeptical of most of these, though, because I've seen wind tunnel results that behind-the-seat bottles which everyone thinks are fast actually produce more drag than either mounting bottles on the seat tube or down tube. Most of these seem to mount all the stuff too low and too far away from the rider. XLab looks better, but I don't know. I'm considering playing with making my own to work with my Aerus seatpost.

You can take a water bottle, slice it down the side, put your stuff inside of it, wrap it with a couple of rubber bands and stick it in a bottle cage on the down or seat tube. This is assuming one bottle is enough for water or your using an aero drink system.

That is a great Idea. I will give it a shot. Thanks
I like this "blowout bag" by Pedro's. It's pretty simple, and it fits nicely under the seat. I find it to be a little less dorky than the "wedge", but that's just me. See what you think. They also have smaller sizes if you like too. This one is enough for two tubes, 2-3 cartridges, and some tools.

For my first tri I fabricated cool device to hold everything I needed. I took a plastic shopping bag, like one you would get at Wal-Mart or your local grocer. Then I put everything inside the bag. Then, I wrapped that up and stuffed it in my spare water bottle cage, it was a sprint so I only needed one bottle of water, tt worked like a charm. If anyone wants illustrations or a detailed write-up just let me know.

Ok, here's where I start to not "get it". It seems that people are just to vehemently opposed to any sort of pre-fabricated gak-holding device. What up with that? Is the tail bag really that dorky? Nothing against SAchris, but how is using a grocery bag a better solution than a nice zippered bag that fits snugly, out of the way, under the seat?
Sorry for being one of those "weird dorky guys" that likes seat-bags, but wtf? Why is everyone trying to re-invent the wheel?

No clue...but I'm a girl. We like cute accessories! I had a great seat bag on my old bike, I think Cannondale made it. It was just the right size to fit a tire changing kit, some money, and my keys.

that's what i have...it's been great over two years now, it is wearing at a screw head under the seat, but otherwise very durable & reliable.

This one maybe? ;)
I can see how a girl might like that. Do they come in pink? No, seriously maybe I could get my g/f one...

Oh, I can explain this one. It's the coolness factor. If you've got a bike that has nothing but bike showing, it's cooler than one with a seat bag. Or if you're like me, and have a Minoura bottlecage mount under the seat you'll know it's nearly impossible to get to the bag if you need anything out of it.
If you look at Chris Lieto's setup for Kona, you don't see gear. Now I don't know this for sure, I'm only guessing so don't rail me if I'm wrong. He has a aero drink bottle and he also has a bottle on the down tube. I "think" the bottle on the down tube is holding his gear. Either that or he's carrying nothing because I can't see it.
And to the poster who mentioned the MIT aerodynamics article (http://www.bicycling.com/article/1,6610,s1-3-12-14995-1,00.html) that came out about bottle placement. You are correct, the bottles behind the seat actually create more drag than bottles on the seat and down together. I think more important is the part about non-aero helmets. Read the article is you're into the geeky stuff.

haha...actually it was pink. But not that one. I think it must have been an older version. I don't see it on the website.
Coolness factor? I could understand if it created more drag, but coolness factor?
I could see how that might cause a problem for you. Let me ask a few questions though. When you pick clothes for your bike, do you try to get matching colors? Do your shorts match your tops? Do you have matching socks? Matching tires? Helmet? Wheels? Sunglasses? Water bottles? Did you intentionally purchase something in order to "match" ? If so, then you understand the coolness factor to some degree. :)

Do your shorts match your tops? —Mom says black matches everything.
Water bottles? —CHEAPEST I will NEVER try to get water bottles that match the bike. I try to only use bottles that I get for free! :)

I suppose everyone likes to look cool...for guys its looking tough and rugged and for girls...well obviously we like to match. :)

In my first tri I had no equipment on the bike leg, I got a flat and had to have assistance from a fellow racer. For Christmas, my brother gave me a Blackburn AirFix and it seems like a handy tool. My question is where do you keep all this stuff like an extra tube and this tool? I have seen fancy carbon cages and between aero bar water bottles but not something that is going to hold these items.
Thanks!
