Given the time frame for an IM in'10, you should be good to go!
This year and 2009 to build base, strength and experience and you'll be fine. I've met folks who have done IM's a their first IM six months off the couch!
As to training programs...look around. there are many. If you want to be self coached (the way I do it) look at Training Plans for Multi Sport Athletes. Pick up a copy of Going Long and The Triathletes Training Bible...there used to be a good plan here at trifuel in the training section...
Welcome and remember...no question is too silly, although the answers may be!

That's great you have your brother to train with. My lil brother lived with me over the summer, and it was nice to have a training partner that close. Now my other brother is starting to do some triathlon training.
The focus for my 2nd year of triathlons is Olympic distance. There are 6 olympic distance races that I picked out, one half-ironman, and a marathon. In 07 I did a sprint, olympic, and half marathon. We'll see how the HIM goes before I think about 140.6 in 2009 or 2010.
Welcome McTri!
Not to be picky, but you're really not coming from Sprint to IM, you'll be coming from IM training to IM. That's what's important and you should have plenty of time by 2010.
My youngest son, due to a schedule conflict, did his first triathlon at Ironman Florida! He and his brother (who had done some Sprints) finished together ... the old man came about an hour later.
Happy training!
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.- Paul

Welcome to the site! You have plenty of time... just focus on building a habit of workouts for now, and get consistent, and learn to listen to your body on how it feels. You'll fine-tune your workouts with those books recommended above, threads here, and just a deeper understanding of the sport.
Thanks Guys,
It is definitely an advantage having my brother to work with. We seem to keep each other motivated on our down days and we do not want to let each other down. Right now I can not wait to get on my new Bike.
New bike! Cool. What kind? And welcome to Trifuel.

Thanks. Since I am "new" to cycling, I am getting a road bike, Specialized Tarmac Pro. My first tri was on a Quintana Roo Caliente tri bike and I had a hard time staying in the aero position. I don't know if it was because the bike was not set up for me or that I have never ridden in that position, but I want to be on the bike a lot so, to start, I need to be in a more comfortable position for me. Next year I already have my heart set on a Pinarello FT1, and I will start working on that aero position. But I figure I better be in shape first, otherwise I will be a guy going 5 miles an hour in the aero position.
My coworkers riding partner just got the Specialized Tarmac and loves it. It took me a little while to get used to aero. Fit is very important. Pinarello's are sweet looking bikes. Enjoy.

I never thought of it like that that, but it's exactly my thinking also. The last thing I want is to fork out money for a Tri bike, and have people on mountain bikes passing me. Last race I averaged 18.1 MPH in a sprint. I figure when I can average 20+ over 25 miles in an Olympic, I deserve to get a Tri bike. Maybe 19.5 MPH if I'm a good boy that year...

Just wanted to say hi. I did my first Tri in November and I was hooked. I have signed up for 1 sprint and 2 Olympics so far in 2008 and my brother and I have a goal of an Iron Man in 2010. How doable is this goal for those that have gone from sprint to Iron Man and what is the best training program for doing it?
We have been training 6 days a week since October, 3 running, 3 swimming until we both have our bikes for Christmas.
thanks!
