What's everyone's preference for valve length? All things being equal, should I go shorter or longer?

I tend to go longer. I like not having to wonder if both my home and emergency on the road pump will fit it well. Although if you have very thin wheels it will be less of an issue. I have ones that have just enough depth to them (for training) that you have to be careful, and while most pumps will (sorta) work, longer ones just make it easier.

If you're using 'normal' depth rims and your pump fit on, I don't see why you'd need longer valves. But if you're using deep rims I guess they're a necessity.

I have race wheels that require long valves. I've just taken to using them in all my wheels, that way no matter what the one in my saddle bag will fit.

i like longer like kylie...i find there's just more to hold onto when you're changing tubes and reinflating...sometimes you need to push the valve in and out and make sure it's seated well. And, as the rubber gasket on a pump head gets older, it seems like being able to seat the pump head well onto the valve helps create a good seal for pumping

I did forget to mention that my rims are the "normal" ones, but it does sound like the longer ones would just make life easier regardless. Thanks everyone.

If you have the Zipp 404's or similar, forget about valve extenders and go with 80mm valves, Quicker and easier.

Alas, I have Shimano WH-R550's for the moment. I can imagine how 80mm valves would look on them. :)
