This winter I wanted time in the saddle to prepare myself for the up coming 2008 season. This is tough living in New England. We already have 1 foot of snow that has all iced over. no winter riding here. I was looking at getting a trainer. I am stuck between fluid/wind/magnet. I have narrowed it down to either a fluid or a magnet. The reviews I have read are that the magnet trainers don't have the progressive resistance. This made since to me. So I went to the bike shop to purchase and was talking to the store clerk. He told me that if cost was a big influence I could get a mag trainer because if you want increased resistance just change to a harder gear. That will give you resistance but not progressive resistance. I know that they now sell progressive resistance mag trainers but they are just as much as the fluid trainers. So my question....

Will purchasing a mag trainer and use the gears as resistance give me the same base fitness to last through the winter or is the most bang for my buck with fitness cost to purchase a fluid. Thanks all.....

I've only ever owned one trainer - the dirt cheapest one I could find at the time:

I've never wished for another. Just throw on a couple of cheap training tires, rent a couple of good movies and start mashing.

Everything I've ever heard says upgrading to a fluid trainer over a mag trainer is worth it. But I've never ridden a mag trainer so I can't make the comparison myself.

I bought a cheapo mag trainer a few years ago and wish I would have gone with a fluid trainer. My mag trainer is really loud and not very smooth at all. Fortunately I live in Phoenix so I don’t have to use it that much. If you are planning on riding a lot on your trainer I would definitely do some research and find a decent fluid trainer. The new Kurt Kinetic Rock & Roll Trainer looks really nice. Supposedly it mimics road riding by allowing a degree of side-to-side movement.

Good luck.

Either trainer will give you a good workout and will help you build base. However, I think that if you can afford a fluid trainer, I would go that route. I have personally never ridden a mag. trainer, but from everyone who I have talked to about it, fluid trainers are the way to go. I would recommend getting a Cyclops fuid trainer if you can afford it, alot of people I know have them and I have never heard of a quality problem.

If you want to see high recommendations for the Cycleops Fluid, just go to the gear page. 13 Trifuelers use it, way more than any other single triathlon product in the database.

I just upgraded to the Cycle Ops fluid and I like it so much more than my old mag trainer.
It's more stable, quiter and very smooth. I also feel like I'm getting a better workout.
I got mine here: http://bikeguyswarehouse.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=425
$235.00 including shipping

Buy the one watrbg2 just linked to if it's in your budget. I just paid $250 for a Cycle Ops fluid. Never used another trainer to compare it with, but no complaints so far.

I can also vouch for the CycleOps fluid trainer over a mag. The difference is monumental. The price Watrbg2 found is really great as well, I'd snap it up. Good luck!

I use the Cycleops Fluid 2 also and its pretty sweet. In my opinion, the Fluid is simply a better product than the mag. I live in WI so I have been forced to ride indoors at times. I've had it for two years and pounded it really hard. I have had no problems what so ever. It's very smooth and fairly quiet. I think i got mine for $250 at REI. It comes with a cool Carmichael Training Systems DVD that can keep you somewhat entertained. Good luck with your shopping!

I have a Minoura Mag 850D. It was $100 shipped to my door. Its pretty quiet and works well. There is a remote on it with alike 6 different resistances, which is great for doing hill simulations. I wouldnt spend the extra $$ on the fluid, but the Cyclops is pretty nice- just not worth the $$ to step up to in my opinion.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Thank you very much. I am happy with all the advice. I think I am going to get the cycle ops fluid trainer. After all it's great reviews and my hopes to exceed this season it is just the right choice.

Anyone compare the Cycleops fluid2 to the Kinetic Road machine fluid? Are they comparable - it seems so from what I can tell.

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

You could also consider getting some rollers. They can really help your form, and you can get them with resistance units. Plus, they're not as hard on your bike as trainers are. Just my $0.02.
