2 New Olympic Distance Triathlons in California
Very cool! McNears beach is on the run that Mike and I do when at my mom's house. We'll definitely have to consider that one :)

I got excited about this because it's near me, but then I saw the course.
Does anyone but me think a 6 lap 40k bike does NOT sound like fun? I suppose it's more like a criterium, which could be exciting, but I'm dissuaded by having to cover the same ground over and over again.

6 laps is a little bit of a grind...on the good side, there are a good concentration of fans so there's plenty of cheering on the course, unlike most bike legs.
(we ran this experiment in Portland this year at the Oregon Trout City of Portland Triathlon; it was not ideal, but it worked and a good number of athletes liked it [not all, but a significant percentage]. as a first race, it worked because registration was not huge. for this next year we're working with the city to expand the course)
The TI course (which has the 6 laps) is basically the same course as the Tri-California (of Escape from Alcatraz, etc) Treasure Island tri.

Earlier this year I did a Half in Argentina and it was a 9 loop bike course, WOW, that was tough. I'm just glad I had my bike computer with me and it was working because I lost count around lap 7.
I thought that was brutal, but I just plotted a race on TRImapper down in Ecuador. This was the first ever Half-iron race in the country, just staged a few weeks ago. Well, I wonder how it went because the bike course for the Half was a 23 loops. The Olympic distance race on the same day was 10 laps. For spectators this is perfect, being able to see you all the time, but I think I would get dizzy going around in loops like that.
Yes, these are half's, but 6 laps sounds easy compared to these types of setups.

Cool, I like the early and late season race additions - there aren't enough of them out there today. Especially late season, when you can have a bit more fun doing ad-hoc races.
