nbc cov of IM champs.... again?
i missed it too :( I found out it was on when i got home last night. I would have taped it. How was the coverage? And how did they treat nina kraft? did they act like the whole doping thing never happened?
"Tough times dont last. Tough people do."
From the little that I saw (my wife and I were still unpacking from our move) it looked like they treated Nina's later-discovered drug use like it didn't happen. Which I agree with to some extent.
The coverage of Ironman Hawaii, has, in my opinion, been one to serve as an inspirational tool, not necessarily a news-carrying device. It's in the best interest of the sport to let folks appreciate the event for what it is, and not mire it with the reprehensible decision of the few. Let folks discover the ugly details another way. But I have no idea if that happened or not, I watched the race for a while, unpacked some boxes, then went for a 10 mile run. :)
Thoughts on that? Should the coverage of Ironman show everything? It's been the motivator for countless couch-dwellers. Would showing the negatives of the choice that Nina made, be a good idea for the event? The sport? The show? The person looking for the reason to get off the couch?
What's the best route?
I didn't get a chance to watch it either. Don't have a TV, and liking that - though I miss my OLN.
I agree with TBD on it being more of an inspirational tool than a news event coverage. Hard to do it as a news event coverage when it airs a month after the fact. It's good to see NBC moving the coverage up though, they used to just have one hour in December. While the inspirational aspect is great, I do wish they covered more of the pro race. In years past most of the coverage has been special interest age grouper stories.
As a follower of the professional side I'd like more in depth coverage on that. Only then will some of the pro athletes get what they deserve in sponsorships and prize money. I am biased as I have 2 brothers in the pro circuit who struggle to make ends meet as they train full time. But like any other sport until there is more media coverage, there won't be more spectator interest and sponsorship money. So I commend NBC and OLN for their coverage of races.
As a side question, How many of you follow the pro circuit? Can name Pros? Most people I meet can only name some of the top U.S. names but don't really follow the sport.
Maybe I'll start a poll...
... o.k. started poll & thread: http://www.trifuel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1090
If there's enough interest, I'll try to add more pro coverage next season. In the meantime, the best pro coverage can be found in my opinion at: http://www.xtri.com
well kind of a follow up.... does OLN show tri weekly... at a certain time/day always.... or does it only show it when theres an event. Once i remember catching it.... but have yet to see it on every again.
As for the pros.... i ironically know quite a few short-course pros by name/country... but i appreciate and enjoy more the long distance races.

I believe thursday's during the summer months they had cycling and triathlon coverage. I believe it was the Summer Sports Zone with Bob Roll and Kristin Gum. As well I believe recently (at least through October) they've been showing some of the Ironman races on Sunday afternoons.
Actually, hold on, be right back...
... o.k. looks like it's over. OLN schedule from ironmanlive:
October 3 - St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon
October 10 - Ironman USA Coeur d'Alene Triathlon
October 17 - Karnten Ironman Austria Triathlon
October 24 - Opel Ironman Germany Triathlon
October 31 - Ironman USA Lake Placid Triathlon
November 7 - Subaru Ironman Canada Triathlon
November 14 - Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon
but check you local listing for Thursday nights on OLN come spring.
I saw the coverage. It was very inspiring. They did not mention the Nina Kraft incident until the very end when they showed the final standings. They put an asterisk by her name and said she had tested positive and admitted using. That was about it. They handled it with class. Had she not tested positive, it would have seemed like she was superhuman. She got docked 4 minutes for drafting and still blew away the competition.
What is up with the Simon Lessing guy? I am pretty new to the sport (but totally in love with it). They made a huge deal of how he was the world champ at Olympic distance and should have been a favorite. He pulled out on the bike for no apparent reason. It didn't look like mechanical failure, just like he was tired. It almost appeared as if he just "wussed" out, for lack of a better term. When you compare him with the age grouper who got hit by a motorcycle, disintegrating his rear wheel, and carried his bike the final 7 miles of the bike, walking in his socks, and still finished, it made it very interesting. What was the deal?
