Heart rate - resting, max, target, etc.
Get some reading material. There's a lot to learn. It's not super complicated, but it's bes to have a foundation of knowledge rather than a simple run down of "train like this."
Joe Friel's Triahtlete's Training Bible is an excellent resource.
Friel also has the Total Heart Rate Training book.
http://www.amazon.com/Total-Heart-Rate-Training-Customize/dp/1569755620/...
It looks more specific, but I would buy the Training Bible first, there's more than enough info in there to get your started on designing a training program of your own.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Best method for determining maxHR:
1. Warmup
2. Do some openers
3. Do a build for a few minutes
4. Sprint up a hill
5. Check HR
