Hey all-
I went for a swim today just to realize halfway through that you could see halfway through my tri shorts. I forget who, but I know someone posted about the same problem earlier this year. I have some Pearl Izumi tri
shorts.
So, the question is, what should I get now? What shorts do you all usually wear? Should I get shorts at all, or just get something to race in? I have a bib and bike shorts, and running apparal, and more standard swim trunks I could wear for swim training. Should I just get something to race in? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I had those pearl shorts as well - they wore down and became see through from general use. I switched to orca race shorts and have no regrets. They last longer too.

funny, besides you did anybody else realize this?

if they are the tri racing short, yeah those are a little thinner, not sure why. there is another pair pearl izumi shorts that is a bit thicker, don't remember the model right now, i'll have to look. I wear a pair of sugoi shorts and they don't seem to be as see through.

I use the Orca's and currently don't have a problem with them being see through. However this only depends on the color of the short for the Orca's. I first had a pair of light gray and I now have a bunch of race pictures which I can't show the family. However, the black shorts appear to be ok.

I've seen a couple during the race, and it is generally not pretty! Usually a bigger hairy dude.

I love my Pearls. at $45, theyre not a bad deal, mine lasted me three season, but I only wear em for races and the occasional brick. I use some Desoto short I got on sale for $10 (got 2 pair) for most of my bricks and short rides. The Pearls are definately nicer than the Desotos. If I had to do it all over again, I do it the exact same way. I will be buying another pair of Pearls for this season.

I really like the 2XU stuff I bought right here at trifuel! Train in 'em. Race in 'em. works for me.
On long rides I wear the bibs or bike shorts...

Oh, and the pool will destroy any tri short pretty quickly. For swimming, I use cheap, generic running shorts I got on sale. Theyre pure nylon, much tougher than poly/spandex blends.

I had the same deal with the cheaper version of the pearl izumi shorts. I wouldn't buy them again form the net just for that reason.

I too had the pearl izumi race shorts, and yes, they did become see through something about the chlorine breaks them down. I now use the 2xu shorts and they work like a dream!

The 2xU long distance and De Soto Power (now Forza) tri shorts are each really tough & durable. But yes, cheaper tri shorts will wear out pretty fast and some will become see-through. Especially silver ones.

i don't know about everyone else, but tri shorts are too expensive for me to be disolved away by chlorine every few weeks. A decent pair of jammers are a lot cheaper and two usually carry me thru a year, maybe longer.

Funny, I had the exact same thing happen with those same tri shorts. I've since switched to TYRE tri shorts for training/racing.

definetely wearing a speedo in the pool. I occasionally will wear an old pair of tri shorts if I discover that my speedo is see through, and need something to wear.

Jammers in the pool = basketball shorts while running = cartoon character jersey on the bike

Not cool. I didn't write the rules, I just follow them. :D

So does that mean when I run in my scooby-doo basketball shorts I am pretty much the lamest thing ever, or does it follow the double negative rule and elevate me to the same level of coolness as Chuck Norris.

I'll preface this by saying I have no idea how things are in Gainesville. But at my pool, we have exactly 1 guy who wears a Speedo. He warms up by spinning his arms on the deck for about as long as he swims, sports a scraggle gray white man 'fro and uses a pull buoy 100% of the time once he actually starts swimming.
If that's what the kids are calling cool these days, I'm very much OK with being the opposite.

But what the hell do I know, I also use a fuel belt on any run longer than 10 miles...

Cool? I am a triathlete. I wear lycra. I shave my legs. I wear a funny looking helmet. I pee in my wetsuit. I spend hours alone training. My idea of a good weekend is getting in 10+ hrs of training. I can't drink two beers without getting sick. My bike is worth more than my car, and no I haven't taken it off any cool jumps. I spend too much time chatting in forums.

I am the anti cool guru.

While I agree with most of what your saying Matt, I do however disagree on one point

Jammer do not equal basketball shorts in the pool
Board shorts = basketball shorts in the pool

don't mean to offend but just remembered what my coach told me the first/only day I showed up in board shorts.

Coach: Chris you like camping?
Me: um yeah sure why?
Coach: Cause you'll be swimming with a tent on your @ss today

Now you guys are picking on guys who use board shorts in the pool. I guess I am just the epitome of being not cool.

I just wear board shorts swimming and basketball shorts while running for added resistance to get the most out of my training, so who is laughing now. :)

ok....you got me there. :) So what do jammers equate to? One day I'm going to publish a book on how to look good while triathlon-ing.

(My roommate and girlfriend saw me smirking while writing this and are making fun of me now for writing on internet forums about this stuff.....they just don't know how cool I really am.)

MMMMM. . . Nothing like a good chafing early in the morning!

I just can't imagine running in board shorts. Guess that makes me a tri snob.

This is why we hang out in forums, because only the truly cool people are here! The rest are so uncool that they just don't understand! I'm sure there is a T-shirt slogan that we could come up with regarding this. As long as that t-shirt is breathable and doesn't chafe. Oh, should also probably have some cool sponsor logo's on the back so we look like pros. Matching running shorts would be good also and maybe a hat and . . .. . . .

meh....it's an okay idea. I guess I'm just a slave to spandex and lycra....

I only go out in public wearing clothes that you can see my abs through...

80's mesh half shirts, cut off sweatpants, high tops with the laces never tied, parted down the middle hair that covered the ears and collar. Ah memories.

Running with mesh basketball shorts on is a timeless kind of cool.

I had a pair of transparent cycling knickers. Very thin for summer made by Castelli. Boy, that was embarrassing! My swim suit gets that way eventually too! I like 2XU as it fits well but they too wear down like everything else.

Matt - I just noticed that your elite-o-meter has moved up to 67%. Congrats! (I'm sure that this is old news, I haven't been paying attention for a while).

When my elite-o-meter reaches or my body fat reaches 10% I'll join the speedo club too.

Haven't been here in a few days. Hillarious thread. Was pedalling along casually on a cooldown after a long ride a few summers back when a guy on a tri bike flew by me I'm sure he thought very impressively. His entire ass was visible through his worn tri shorts. I guess I might've told him but by the time I stopped laughing he was way out of earshot.

Don't swim in trishorts unless you're in open (non-clorinated) water. I've found Louis Garneau stuff to be of dubious quality - zippers stick, material disintegrates. Sugoi stands up. Really like the Zoot tri shorts I got this summer but too early to tell if they'll last.

Thanks! They're changing the rules for next year, though, and I had a string of bad luck in the last couple races that would've been my third qual for the pro card (crashes! LOL). So I sent off my application anyway with a third race that might not count as kind of a hail mary before the rules change on Jan 1. They'll most likely say no, but it can't hurt to send it in! :)

I still swim in Speedos, I have been able to keep my bodyfat levels low (in spite of all the beer) and I feel I've earned the right to look like an 80's retro geek, at least an in shape geek. Haven't raced in them in a long time though. Maybe this year, just once.......
For racing, I can only wear the Desoto tri shorts, my legs are big and muscular, and the Desotos don't have those aweful leg grippers that cut into my quads. The silver ones get a little see through when wet. Desoto used to make red tri shorts, would really love a pair, but they don't make them anymore. And yes, I know, the new Forzas come in red but I don't like that black stitching that "outlines the package", also I like the mid-thigh length of the older model Desoto tri shorts. Done a ton of internet searches with negative results, anyone know where I can still find these?

Try emailing DeSoto -- in all my interactions with Emilio he and his company have been more than happy to help get what you want and to do some customization of his products where he can -- perhaps the thread color to red, or a slightly different length.
