which Ironman?
From what I've heard, either of those two would be great. the Placid is the US Nationals for Ironman distance so you may have some TV coverage and pros :) Plus I hear it's a good venue and good run course (mostly flat).
I think your goals for the season prior (2005) sound good. the halfs and the marathon will give you a good idea as to what you can expect and where your conditioning is. The key however will be maintaining your fitness and carrying it into the 2006. Sounds like a good plan! Good luck, have fun, and keep us posted.
Which halfs are you thinking about for next year?
I live in Chicago area as well. I did Lake Placid as my first IM. At the time, it was a big mistake, as I didn't have that much bike fitness to be riding in the mountains. But....now you have an option.
If you are going to do LP or CAN, you can train on the IM-WI course, only a 2-hour drive from Chicago. That course is really tough, and is good training for ANY Ironman you might do. I've done WI, LP and CAN, and the WI course is the hardest.
So if you can do race rehearsal rides on the WI course, you will be set for whichever IM you tackle.
Personally, I think CAN is a better course than LP. Single loop swim, bike and run. Easy on the head. Great crowd support. Beautiful scenery. Great town.
Thanks for the advice, training on the IM WI course sounds like a swell idea. I am erring towards IM Canada because it is latter in the season and therefore would give me more time to get ready.
Can't wait to enter some races for next year. I have taken a month 1/2 off and intend to start a winter conditioning program concentrating on my weaknesses and form for the swim and bike.

I heard that the Florida Ironman is a good one because of the flat terrain, it's in November, good luck!
I've done both IM Lake Placid & Canada, and personally I love Lake Placid. The 2 loop format means you get much more crowd support which by the end of bike & run is what you need to keep going. The crowd is also much more vocal than polite Canadian audiences (I can say that coz I'm Canadian!).
I'm a bit baffled by someone who said that LP run course was flat - have you seen the profile?! Have you run the course?! There are 2-3 serious hills in there, but the crowd is awesome and keeps you going up them.
Having said all this, remember that everyone has their own personal preferences.
I'm in with CoachD on the IMLP run course...I've done the race twice, and let me tell ya...the first lap of the run may "seem" flat but the second lap sure isn't!
I can only speak of IMLP..great support..Awesome vols...
The bike is hilly compared to some other IM's in North America, but that means some great screaming downhills...where I've seen some bad crashes.
The swim of course is flat..and I like the two loop format... it's like a really big crit.
As with any IM it seems..be there the morning after the race to sign up for next year or be sitting on your computer that morning...since you are close to WI..go and watch the race, which will hook ya,sleep in your car then sign up the next day!
Best of Luck!

Go international! The only difference in cost will be in airfare. Make it a vacation, head to France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Lanzarote. Check out the "Road to Kona" issue of Inside Triathlon Magazine. It details all foreign and domestic races.
International is definitely a good bet -- Ironman Japan is tough, but an amazing place, a well run race, and what a fantastic, supportive crowd! I'll be at Ironman Austria this year, which I hear is a great race, too.
Some might consider this sacrilege...but the only thing that makes an Ironman,"Ironman" is the corporateness of it all.
There are a growing number of Iron distance races around the country that are well run, beautiful, smaller and cheaper. Sure you won't get to go to Kona but that is out of reach for most of us anyway. You might consider one of those... Don't get me wrong...I LOVE Ironman,it's a wonderful experience, but have to consider non-corporate races as an option due to money constraints.
As I said before...Best of luck!

I can only offer first hand experience of the IM Canada course. The weather varies of course , but one year we had high winds and slow times many more people than usual DNF. The temperature is always hot during the day but cools off by 8 o'clock and some slower runners actually put on a jacket. The lake is always wetsuit temp - about 20 degrees C or 72F.
2003 we had a forest fire close the bike route 24 hours before the start but it was re-opened in time. The swim was made into 2 loops because the safety specialists who usually augment the crew on the lake were called away to fight the forest fire. The run was reduced to 3 loops instead of an out and back, so they are adaptive to conditions.
Expect the unexpected.

I am doing the IM Florida in November 2006. I heard that it is a good course for a 1st time IM.
The swim is in the Gulf of Mexico, warmer water(cool enough for a wetsuit) and buoyancy from the salt water. The bike is pretty flat and so is the run. Florida in November so the temp is mild.
I was also looking at the Great Floridian IM Distance. Not IM but same season as IMFL and pretty close in conditions.
Nothing to it, but to do it
I just received a questionaire from IMC that I filled out. I suppose others have as well. One thing that I am most upset with was that we had to pay to get a set of pics from the race so, I added for improvements that we should AT THE VERY LEAST, is to be able to get a pic of ourselves crossing the finish line without paying for a frikin' set of photos for 75$ or so! If it wasn't for my wife getting a pickie, I never would have one of me and the kids crossing. They should be able to post pics of each person crossing on the web page of IMC so that we can download it or even view it. Other tris do it, why not IMs?
Or do they???? That means I am missing something.....

I guess everybody wants to make a buck on an IM finisher.
The whopping race fee isn't enough?

Well, The intent of this post is to get ALL IM finishers that fill out the form to say the same thing. I am hoping that may get them to look at the situation?

I got that survey too. I ony assumed we had to pay for the pictures, just like any other race. I dont like the fact that you pay $400 + and then get a teeshirt...HELLO I know they want you to buy finisher stuff, but even the local 1/2 marathons around here provide technical finisher shirts (THANK GOD Disney World Marathon finally got a clue with that last year after years of giving a teeshirt out).
BBB- How DO you get a hold of your pictures????
Dunno. Try calling them. I have mine cause my wife took them. It's a picjie of me and the kids running across the line hehe. I like it! I spoke with a lady at the finisher tent the day after and she said she paid 75$ Can for the photos. Also ask PoC. He usually has them each year.

A T-shirt is all you get.?
What does it say?
"I did an Ironman and all I got was this lousy T-shirt"
Sounds pretty weak. What else do you get in your good bag?
Nothing to it, but to do it
ahahhahahahahahahahah YES pretty much. You get a hat and a teeshirt. Baby blue this year.SPLENDID!
You gat, a medal, a towelette, a finisher hat, a rubber (Lance kind of band) saying Ironman Canada and a t-shirt along with more stuff to help you spend MORE $$$$$. AND wait, you also get to beat the hell of of yourself for the low, LOW cost of $575 Canadian!! A bargin and a half.
I'll take two please....

What a marketing event eh? I wish I would have thought of it. I wouldn't be here! Not that there is anything wrong with here Tribro hehe. But, like all others I fell into the trap AND cause I like to beat myself up will once again do it.
My wife has it right. "why do you have to pay for it, just go out and do it yourself" Now why didn't I think of that!!!! Duh!

oh I am sure. How would they know if you actually WERE a finisher? Although would someone REALLY do that? I was there so early, to make sure I got something in MY SIZE! What is wrong with people? We got to the merchandise tent on Thursday afternoon (keep in mind it only opened on Wednesday) and EVERY fleece in Womens M or Mens Small wer GONE. This was also the case with most of their technical clothing (bike jerseys etc). WHAT ARE THEY THINKING??? This happend to me the year before last at the DW marathon....that time they did not even bother to order any Small items (jackets were all Mens) only M-XL. Ok, MOST people who do an IM or a marathon are not an XL. I am not teeny by ANY means but even the Mens Small finisher fleece I got is a bit large. I dont get it.
World Triathlon Corporation President Ben Fertic is looking down on us all and laughing right now. We give him so much $$$$ hehehe.

I want to do a Ironman in 2006, I live in Chicago and wanted to travel to the event (Change of location would great). Anyway I was thinking of trying either the Ironman USA in Lake Placid or Ironman Canada. Both look tougth but the settings are so awsome. Does anyone have any thoughts on these two races?
Also any advice about what to do the season before a ironman? I figured I would try 2 1/2 ironmans and 2 olympic distance races and then a marathon in the winter about 11/2 months after my last tri. Does this sound like a good idea? Any advice about what to do the season before the onslaught of a ironman training schedule?
Thanks
