I finished a marathon and triathlon in July after that I started feeling pain in my IT band. I am still running and completed a 2nd triathlon but this thing is plagueing me. I tried not running at all for 2 weeks and it seemed fine for a week when I returned to running but then it returned. Typically it doesn't start hurting until I reach 4 miles. I have tried icing, ibufrofin, massage, stretching, chiropractic care, elastic bands for IT above the area of irritation but nothing takes care of it completely. Does anyone have any ideas I could try?

physical therapy!

I had this injury really badly and nothing I did worked to make it better including rest. I went to physical therapy for about two months and it finally healed. The problem is that it is probably really tight. Stretching is the most important thing you can do. A physical therapist will be able to give you deep tissue massage, ultrasound as well as various other forms of treatment. You will also learn ways to strengthen it so you will avoid reinjuring it in the future.

I too had IT band pain while running in Highschool, some 20 years ago. After many Dr's prescribing me anti-inflamitories and other things, I was about to quit. My college x-country coach suggested I modify my running style. It turns out I was landing on heel instead of my mid- or fore-foot. By bringing my foot underneath the centerline of my body I was able to land correctly with my knee slightly bent. This eased the pressure off my IT Band and used my knee as more of a shock absorber than a brake. I have been running and Tri-ing for 20years since without any IT pain. If you need help figuring out the correct running position check out the Pose Method of Running video or dvd.
Good Luck! let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. I actually started pose running acouple of months ago. My chiropractor had mentioned Chi running so I checked it out online. A couple days later I saw an article on pose running in Runner's world. It has really helped my knees which use to bother me whenever I ran more than 10 miles but so far it hasn't "cured' my IT problem.
