Christ, thats terrible to see. Where is this and what is the cause?

My fancy new blogitty blog.

It's just north of Atlanta and we're in a real bad drought.

I've been hearing how bad the drought is in the Atlanta area, but I've yet to see it.
That looks really bad. Wow.
That is so low!! It's the same at the reservoirs and lakes I run by here in Southern California. Although maybe not that bad.

Jez, you guys should come up to my neck of the woods. We are having some of the worst flooding to hit the area in years.
Those pictures remind me of the children's story where a bunch of chinese boys have crazy abilities. One sucks up all the water in the sea, and people go to investigate the dry seabed until he can't hold the water anymore.
Obviously its terrible for the area and for the health of that lake. But its also pretty interesting to see everything that is normally beneath the surface. Iron Dan- dig some drenches and send that water toward atlanta!
What's really interesting is this lake, Lake Lanier, is a man-made lake. There were pix on the news of what's underneath - lots of cut down trees - part of an old road that went thru right where they put the lake, and bleachers from an old race course.

I remember that one! I also really liked it but couldn't remember the name.

I knew it was something like that! Sorry to hijack the thread with it, now I've triggered mass nostalgia, haha
tri-ac your pix are reassuring. Right now we're about 20ft in a deficit, but hopefully winter will bring some good steady rain - not good for training outside now, but hopefully for swimming in the spring :D

maybe you can lobby for a shorter swim.

Wow, I didn't realize that was Lanier, I thought it was Strom Thurmond.
...and not to get too political ...uhhh ... but, I wonder how low it would be if they hadn't tried to save those little snails down stream.

Thanks for sharing.
Coincidentally, last night I saw a show on knowledge network about the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan.
It has shrunk from 27,000 sq. kilometres to 9,000 sq.kms and the fishing industry is gone.
Ships lie rusting in the cracked dry earth.
The cause is much the same as in Georgia - upstream irrigation depriving the lake of water, plus some climate change.

Don't expect any relief from our end (Alabama). I don't know as much about the situation as I should considering my Dad works for the Corps of Engineers, but I do know it's just a big mess with the water wars between AL and GA.
This is just more evidence against big cities. We should all go back to subsistence farming and the barter system :P
hmm ok i'll give you this sack of corn and you give me that brand new S-works transition with Zipp 808s on it deal?

I know you are jesting to some degree but it has always been interesting to me that biologists are very detailed when it comes to "exceeding the carrying capacity of the land" when it comes to wildlife or stock but you can pile all the people you want anywhere if you've got the development dollars to build a living space.

That would have to be a pretty big sack ... it would take about 23 tons of corn at current prices ...
:-)

Here's an update:
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/gwinnett/stories/2008/01/05/pool0105g.html?cxntlid=inform
No lakes, now possible no pools - can you believe it?!
"90% of the game is half mental" Yogi Berra
Hey, thanks for the link. It was broken by the server's filter - but I backed the URL out to "/metro" and found the story anyway.
We in the Okanagan live in a semi-desert but we are experiencing rapid population growth - we could see the same thing as Georgia in a few years. Scary thought.
Makes Kylie's Endless Pool look pretty good, or was it Britda that has the EP?

Ya. the URL gets cut on the display if it's really long. You can put the old style BBCode around it to make sure it doesn't (which I did).

Oops, sorry guys - thanks Tribro!
