Wish list of things for the new forum

As we all adjust to the new forum, it seems that Paul has to collect thoughts about the new forum in lots of different threads. I thought it might be helpful to start one thread where we can all post ideas/observations/thoughts about things we might want to a.) have if available new or b.) have back if its not functioning in a way we appreciated from the prior system.

If this has already been done, sorry, I didn't see it, someone bump it to the top.

I'll start with:
1.) I really liked seeing how many people had read a post.
2.) I really liked seeing the tri related experience of the poster in their avatar
3.) I don't see how to use the tags yet aside from when I create a topic. Will it be possible to create tag clouds etc from them
4.) Will this allow for posting of inline photos directly?

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

Good idea!

(1) Email notifications!
(2) A "# New" link that really works when reading oldest to newest

Oh, and as for your #4, you should be able to just use html to add images now: < img src = " http://mywebsite/myimg.jpg " / > (without the spaces before img, =, ", /, and >). Using width and height attributes should resize images for you. (And that link in there won't work if you click it -- it's just an example).

thanks for putting this together.

looks like Kylie got number 4.
just setup number 1.
2. will try to setup something similar soon.
3. yes tags are only for first creating the thread, or article. I will be adding a tag cloud type thing soon as well. once we get more content with tags. right now it wouldn't show much.

1. email notifications on the list.
2. actually look into how to fix the new thing now. hopefully by end of week.

keep the list and ideas coming. can't guarantee I get make them all happen but will do my best. juggling other work projects as well. but we'll get there.

Ability to do a search -

I had set it to display newest post first, and now I it has reverted back to oldest.

Needed a search to find the post that said how to do this config - cuz I can't find it now...

search will come soon and is one of the benefits to porting over. search will index the whole site (articles, races, etc.) instead of just the forums.

I'm being patient and I know it will all come together at some point...please remember there are those of us who think clouds are in the sky and have no idea or the inclination on how to use HTML to post a photo...I'm used to easy and intuitive. I am not in the computer industry and while some stuff is easy for you guys...it's not for the likes of me.
I'm not going anywhere because Trifuel is my home...but right now it is far from the user friendly situation we had before...at least for my sorry old bones.
Now that I got that off my chest...don't delete my file Dad! ;)

Paul I'd be happy to write up a post with how to do things in the content of posts (using the available html tags, as opposed to the old way of having magic buttons). Sounds like that would be helpful for people, so just let me know.

I have another option for inserting/uploading photos on the list.

I totally understand this isn't easy for everyone and i'm trying to keep up with the requests and make everyone happy. don't worry about clouds, they'll be just links to the most popular topics.

maybe send me a list of what is frustrating. what features you used regularly that you don't have now... or is it just the different layout?

thanks. file intact!

Another request: When you preview a new topic, it doesn't show the formatting you have applied. So it just reads as a single box of text. It would be nice to be able to make sure your html tags are being used as you meant.

On the tags issue - if you can set it up so that even readers of posts can add tags, the data will populate much faster. If that's possible that's great.

I see the # of reads now, if possible, I liked the summary information on the forum main page before I clicked on the read. Not terribly important in the long run - on the recent posts page, quite useful.

Thanks Kylie for the html tutorial! It was helpful for me.

Looking forward to the coming attractions. Thanks!

Thanks for all your hard work!

One thing that I miss is the ability to scan the main forums page and see:

1) All of the topic areas and whether or not I'm 'up to date' on that topic area (i.e. swimming)
2) What the most recent thread is in each topic area

It makes it easy to quickly hit the main forum page and see what I'm up to date on. At the moment I have to do a number of extra clicks.

o.k. I think the update to forum tracker should accomplish that. I added another row to show what forum category the post is in. So now it'll display all the latest activity across all forum categories by last post time. All new posts for you should be indicated as such as well. You might want to bookmark that link to save a click: http://www.trifuel.com/forum/tracker

hope that helps.

-Being able to see number of new private messages on the main screen (maybe just a number next to 'Messages'), so you don't have to go into your messages to check.

Getting much easier to use Paul!

Noticed today though:
(1) If the post is new, the "# new" still takes to the first new comment. It would be nice if it just took you to the first new thing (like the little down blue arrow used to). I like to be able to just click in the same column instead of having to switch where I click if the post itself says "new" by it.

(2) In the "Recent posts" page the size of the # of comments and the "#new" links are HUGE! Perhaps make them all normal size, but bold ones with new?

Not a biggie, but I did like the indicator as to whether or not I had posted on a thread or not. Helped with determining if interested in following a thread or not.
And being able to mouse over a thread and see the first line or two of the original post was nice.

What about replying to messages with QUOTE tags? I've noticed people replying with the old quote tags and it doesn't work. Obviously that's from the old VB forum or whatever it was....

So, is there a new Quote tag? How can we reference back to a certain post?

Here's one: the forum picture size (avatar?) According to the profile page "Your virtual face or picture. Maximum dimensions are 85x85 and the maximum size is 30 kB." But the one shown on your posts is resized to 44x44, which ends up with some funky resizing issues. (my pic makes it look like I have a mohawk and no lips, course it was sized for the old forum at 48x48)

can we get a better max of 88x88 for a clean 50% scaling?

Navigation - when I wish to post to a multi-page thread I must click it,
wait for it to load,
go to the bottom of the page,
scroll up,
click on "last page" - to read the last post.
post my comment,
wait for it to load - back at the first page again.
So, to re-read my post
go to the bottom of the page,
scroll up,
select "last page"
wait for it to load,
then go to the bottom of the page,
scroll up to read the last post.

1) we need that button to the most recent post on the forum summary page as Kylie suggested.
2) when you have submitted the post - we need it to navigate to the last post in the thread.

Please.

3) What? No smilies?

1. Less posts per page (im guessing this might be an option on my end, ill look into it)
2. Page selection links at the top of the page, so i dont have to scroll through all of page 1 to get to page 4 for example.

Looks like its all coming together nicely.

Can you not see that from the 'recent posts' section? That shows all new from all threads and forums and shows what's new for you. It actually shows much more than the old forums as that only indicated the very last thread (there could have been several new posts in general discussions and it would only show the last) now you get everything across all sections. Not sure I understand what is missing?

Here is a page of the sections: http://www.trifuel.com/forum/ maybe this works better?

well don't I feel silly, the forum index has exactly what I want and I hadn't even seen it - did you sneak it in when I wasn't looking? :)

is there a 'quote' format option, that's needed but I can't seem to find one.

With that page of sections though... the "#new" links don't make too much sense. I can open a forum that says "#new" is 3, and there are like 20+ new ones in that view...??

ya. not sure why that is. one reason I hid it. I think it may clear out after that 30 day. It may be that the 'new' is for 30 days of posts but there are more than that. don't know. another thing on the list to investigate :)

Another thought regarding the #new thing. In the old version when I hit New Posts, it would display only those threads which had new comments since the last time I had logged on to the site.

In the current version, when I hit New Posts I get a tremendously long list of every thread with comments that I haven't read. So even if it's a thread that didn't pique my interest to want to continue to read it, I can't "ignore" it since it just stays on my list of threads with new posts, which makes it unwieldy for me to sort through.

I'm trying, Tribro! It's just not quite yet as user friendly as the earlier version IMHO.

Tamara -- I see that the newest things are at the top. So a thread I don't care about is farther down, unless it has had another new post since I last looked. Like the old site, when a new post was made even threads I wasn't following showed up again.

It's definitely a bit hard to get used to... but I'm reserving judgment until it is fully ready ;)

Ya it works different in that it lists all threads but flags those "new" ones and puts them all in order of last post. I never need to go to the second page. Now that I have the gear guide phase 1 launched I'll get back to the forum fixes. I just added a pager to the top of threads with multple pages so you don't have to scroll to the bottom. more coming...

o.k. I think I got the "new" link working now on pages with multiple pages. fingers crossed this is it... assuming it is fixed, what's the consensus on lowering the number of posts per page? now set to 90... too high? thanks and let me know if you run into issues.

again, thanks for everyone's patience and willingness to roll with the changes.

o.k. so there should now be a "Subscribe Post" link. If subscribed, you will get email updates when a new comment is posted to the thread. You can manage the threads from your account page (now just unsubscribe to those you subscribed to). If it works without any hiccups, I'll try to expand to subscribing to get notifications on new posts, articles, categories, etc...

Is there a way to set an "auto subscribe me if I post"? I really loved that I just had to comment and I'd just get my notifications. I comment a lot and don't really want to have to take 2 steps (of also subscribing) since I'm lazy :)

And the "# new" seems good in multipages! :) I was able to get to the current new posts in the large birthday thread. Thanks!
