I've got the dish set to go to NBC @ 4:30! The wife is very excited.
I will have my DVR get it so I don't miss it!!

I might be a little biased as Chris (the bro) got some good coverage, but I thought they did a better job this year on the actual race itself. The little rivalry, interviewing Allen and Scott, covering the men deeper than 2. Well done.
And was that Leonardo DiCaprio on the voice over at the end???
I could have done without all of the puking Norman was doing. It wasn't bad, yeah your bro got some good coverage.

Yeah, the song at the end is from and old dicaprio movie called "the beach." Orbital did the track, and used the clip of his voice from the movie.
Nice coverage of the race, and of Chris. I almost cried when Sister Madonna didnt make the cutoff. My mom did.

I made my split second of fame. For a very brief moment while I was running past Macca on the Queen K. I yelled and gave him a high 5. The shot was of my back from a helicopter and I have on a Hammer shirt. Better than my bud Marky V who led the amateurs for 7.5 hrs and got nothing.
Chris rocked. He layed it out there. He did what he had to do to win and that's all that counts.
The voice over was Leo at the end. It was from the movie "The Beach" 1999-2000?
I fixed it for you tri-ac. To update signatures go to your account page (link at top of page) then click the "Edit" tab. At the bottom is a window for your signature. Use html to code the links. So replace [URL with "a href" and then close it.
When you get tired of shoveling snow IMWI is on versus today, 3-4 p.m. All of our warmer climate friends can watch too. ;)

I goofed on the DVR and recorded the wrong day. Now I have 2 hours of golf coverage from today ;-P

I'm sure Andy Baldwin is a lovely man and a fine naval officer. But I've gotta be honest, he got coverage at Kona last year. He got coverage at IMKY this year (just a few weeks ago on Vs), and then that exact same interview on the Kona show this weekend. Seriously, let it go! Otherwise, great coverage. Definitely made my 90min on the trainer go a lot faster!

I thought the coverage was well done.
(Although I can always do without the drama the media has to put in )
Chris L. is an awesome Triathlete
That was an interesting outfit Sindballe was wearing during the run ... and interesting reasons. I can definitely relate to the effects of heat.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.- Paul
Maybe it was just me, but I was a little disappointed. They didn't seem to have quite the emotional stories like the Hoyts, Sarah Reinertsen, or John Blaze. I also thought they didn't built up the competative mood as much as they have had in the past. Still, my favorite show of the year.

Cayman,
Watched the IMWI coverage with my wife who couldn't make it to the race. I made it on the coverage! It was about 45 minutes in when Fritsche (sp?) was recovering and had just re-taken third and was running down 2nd. Nice shot of him lapping me (#807) in the blue tri-top and white hat as we run just after going under that little overpass bridge. At least I was running in the shot!

The slow motion shot of the swim start with the chosen music gave me some serious goosebumps. Taped it and watched the first half last night. Will watch the second half tonight. I thought it was classy that Stadler went to the finish line to congratulate Macca.
I{m with Googles here too.
The actual race had better coverage and I did apreciate it since...ii´what we want to see.
But giving that amount of space to this Balwin guy is stupid! So what if he was in a stupid tv show I DON´T CARE!!!
Marky V should have been in the coverage! Come on the man swam faster than any of the pros. And what about Desiree Ficker? Of course she did horrible this year but she was 2nd place last year and she bearly got coverage.
The emotional stories were not as good because....well maybe they didn´t have any impresive stories this year. Belive me....my hat off to every finisher and their personal quests but the directing of the show this year didn´t make me 100% satisfied.
The interesting part was how they included the clip from Maccas interview where he said he wanted to beat everyone at their best. He wanted every guy at 100% and he didn´t get it! I think they might have included that on purpose. but who knows.
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
Too many human interest stories for my liking. I guess it makes it more real for the non-athlete viewer, but it's a race after all. What I'd really like to see is longer coverage. We're all going to miss out on someone important when they distill a 17-hour race into one hour. Other impressions:
Did NBC really have to show Stadler puking in slow motion?!
Showing the official stopping the folks at T2 when they didn't make the bike cut off was very emotional. I hope they will return more determined than ever. I know Sister Madonna will.
Chrissie Wellington's shear joy at her unexpected win was awesome. I'm sure she will garner many fans.
Was classy of Stadler to congratulate Macca at the finish. Maybe their war of words got some press, but taking the high road (showing sportsmanship) has ultimately got to be better for the sport.
I've got new respect for Rutger Beke. It would have been easy for him to walk off the course.
Is there a replay at some point in time, I totally spaced it and missed it.
They have replayed it in August the past 2 years.
I mostly enjoyed the coverage.
Interestingly enough they never mentioned Andy Baldwin as "the Bachelor" which surprised me. They still showed him, but people who don't already know he was on that show were probably wondering why.
I wish Scott Rigsby (double leg amputee) had gotten more coverage. From what I understand he was *the first double amputee to EVER complete an Ironman* and the coverage showed him but didn't mention that part?? I know a lot of people were hoping that would be Rudy, but someone else did it first and I felt he deserved more props for it.
I was also looking for Marky and disappointed that there was nothing of him. I think it adds to the race that someone swam faster than the pros! But I'm a bit biased about that.
I did like the coverage of the switches in the men's race, and the pure enthusiasm Chrissie showed, as well as her interview about her pre-pro life.

I missed the opening 1/2 hour - I also could have done w/o the bachelor segment.
Did like seeing Pros give their all - especially when the day goes bad - like how Natasha fought with her coach about dropping out when in obvious pain. And I think it was Beke continuing on the run when only able to walk. Nice to see that level of commitment. (Not like Norman throwing his bike cause they got a flat in a previous year)

Beke has an amazing amount of class in my mind for sticking it out, and walking it in with us AGer's. He seriously has become one of my favorite pro athletes for that.
On the rest of the coverage thought it went alright, but agree enough is enough on Mr Baldwin. The one lady taking to long to get off the bike which cost her the bike cut off was absolutely heart wrenching! Classy production as always by NBC.

Yeah I was curious with the lady getting off the bike if there was a language barrier involved. If I heard right, she was a school teacher in Japan. And that might have been why she got confused with so many people yelling at her to get off it.
Miles of Life --- Powered by MarkyV
I just watched it on my roommates computer, he recorded it for me. All I gotta say, WOW!
I sympathized with the lady who didn't make the bike cut-off. I really do ... but I tell, that's something I like about the IM and HIM(maybe others)... that you have to make the cut-offs! No exceptions! It makes making them mean something. Nowadays with Youth programs that want to give everyone a trophy (pure nonsense IMO) it is refreshing to have a sport that has clear rules in this regard.
On other notes:
1) What problem was Chris M having with his helmet in T1 ?
2) What caused Norman S. to lose his guts ? Did he start out to fast or something. I've known seasoned IMs to have stomach issues early in the bike and wonder if it is a critical timing thing of too fast too soon after T1 coupled with nutrition or something like that ???
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.- Paul
now that i've been a triathlete a couple of years, i've been watching Kona coverage differently from the way I used to, and I do agree with the comments above about human interest stories vs competitor stories. But, I enjoy it nevertheless, especially now that it's in HD (although...did they HAVE to spend as much time with Norman puking?). I've also been watching all the televised IM's this fall just to see the courses/conditions and mass starts.
Tons of people were sick this year. There was a bit of a flu bug going around. I believe that is what I heard got to him (same as Faris). It got Mike too... he came off the bike, gave me a kiss, and told me how he'd been puking the whole ride! Bleck!
Miles of Life --- Powered by MarkyV
I listened to an interview with Macca and he pretty much said he couldn't get the helmet strap to clip. He had practiced it and all, but for some reason in T1, he couldn't get it to work.
Anybody know if there is a re-broadcast date? Maybe on Versus?
Inquiring minds want to know!!
''Nothing to it, but to do it''
http://beads1985.trifuel.net/
i've noticed that some of the broadcast times listed here by other posters have been different in my area, so everyone should check the website of their local cable provider for schedules
i've gotten into the habit of hitting the search function once a week to see if any triathlon listings are up and then set them to record...IMWI is tomorrow on my non-HD versus channel
beads i'm sure NBC will rebroadcast the ironman race, they put a lot of money into it for it to be once plus I seem to recall it being on once or twice last year.

Base 1 (Week 2, 16.5hrs)
Check out my blog!
ironman.com says the re-air is July 26.
Beads!
I recorded the show on my old fashioned VHS. (For some of you younger kids, this is how old people watched movies before DVD and Blue rays). It's a real bad recording because the tape has been recorded over so many times. I've watched it a few times already, so I could send you the tape.
As for the show, 2 things stood out for me. One, watching Natasha Badman keep going while in that much pain. She's unbelievable. And two, Rutger Beke continuing on in respect for the age groupers. With people like these representing the sport, it makes me proud to be a triathlete.
The Rutgar Beke issue was neat. He basically does it out of respect for the non-pros. Very cool.
Beads I could send you a DVD burned off my TiVo if you would like as well. For some odd reason it cut the sides off a bit but still is fine. Send me a PM with your address and I should be able to get it out to you in the next few days.

I've been watching the NBC coverage for 15 years now and it still annoys me how they spend 90% of the time on 10% of the athletes - the pros and whatever disease is the flavour of the day.
90% of the race is AGers and they get 10% of the coverage.
Apart from the pro coverage - which is fine, I like that - if you watched this show you would think everyone in it - apart from the pros - is dying of a disease or missing a bodypart, or running it in honour of someone who died.
There are twenty-odd age group races going on, men and women, ranging from 20 - 76. They made one reference to Lolly in the W65-69 - because she is a local I suspect. That was it for AG competition.
This may be entertainment but it falls short of being presented as an athletic contest.
With the "Track an Athlete" computer program we could have much better coverage of the AG racing.
