Well, I guess I should have taken more than a week off after my IM. What started as ITB issues has now led to lower leg pain/ tightness. I naturally figured it would go away (of course I knew better). After having to walk the last 7 miles in a 1/2 marathon this weekend (yes in a HALF UGG) I went to see a PT. She first said "no running for 4 weeks". My response was "HELLO, my marathon is in 5". So she said, "ok, we can re-negotiate in 2".

So, this means I may not be doing the Disney Marathon which makes me SAD :( since there are 7 of us doing it (family and friends)
No biking or running. I naturally can swim, and she could not understand why just swimming is not enough. So out to the pool I go. When I got the endless pool in June I thought it would be nice to have incase I could not run. I did not count on ONLY swimming.

Ok, done whining.

She doesn't know what she is talking about, just get out there and run;)

I have never had ITB issue but from what I hear, the best things for it are a foam roller and rest. Good luck, but if you are physically unable to do the Disney Marathon, don't push it and risk further issues.

Yes, the foam roller will certainly do the trick.

Speed hurts; how fast do you want to go?

Endless pool?!? Awesome!

Sorry about the injury, but that is what us type A personalities get ourselves into by training to hard. Hope the rehab goes well!

waiting may be the right thing to do...definitely listen to your doc

but if you don't trust this doc to help you deal with it proactively, find another or a PT who will (someone with experience dealing with it)

ITBS can come from muscle imbalances, poor stretching, or overdoing it, or some combination of those...knowing exactly which of these it was will help you proactively deal with the solution

the foam roller is great for a lot of people but it may not be YOUR solution...in my case, I had a muscle imbalance from an old ankle surgery that only revealed itself the first time I did a 12 mi run...so for me, strengthening that ankle/calf and stretching my hamstrings was the solution

definitely check in with someone who understands the condition from an athlete's point of view...if you haven't already

Thanks all :)
I have done the roller, but have to admit to a lack of stretching in the past. Really now the lower leg (odly enough) is the painful part.

Anton, she told me NO on the water running, I was shocked. I think she just wants to get the inflamation down, then go from there. Unfortunately my 20 mile run is out this weekend.
I may be cheering you on in Florida with a martini in my hand .HA

PS She is at a sports rehab clinic, although I have not seen her before I have used the clinic for a few other injuries. I don't think I COULD run right now if I wanted to.

Aqua jogging is great cross training when the goal is reducing impact, since it replicates the running motion but involves no impact. Unfortunately for something like an ITB issue, the problem isn't impact but the running motion itself. Every time you cycle your legs through you aggravate the ITB which is why your doc recommended no running, biking or aquajogging.

That's the spirit! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Best wishes on a speedy recovery Britt. FWIW, I would guess that you're at a point in your fitness where you can miss a lot of training and still finish the race IF you heal properly.

Major suckage Britt! Sorry for that. What about walking it?? That way you can still do the Mary. Hey, we all need the downtime now. That way you will be mentally bursting to start in the New Year.

That sucks. Getting injured in the leadup to a big race is so hard. But follow the doc's orders and you will come through. Hang in there!!!

I ignored an ITB pain once because I had to get this 20 miler in as prep for a marathon... I missed the marathon and it was months before I could run over 2 miles again without pain. Funny how it doesn't hurt a bit to walk. My rule now is "if the ITB starts hurting - stop running". Thankfully I haven't had that problem again. Stretching really helps the rehab.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.- Paul

My sympathies to you, Dear girl, for whatever that's worth.
I'm sure you will have a full recovery if you are patient just now.

Foam roller.

Don't do the marathon if you aren't recovered. You don't want to make it worse.

ok, so what I had thought to be ITB related is really a TIBIA stress fracture
1. not where the pain started...but hurts there now
2. OUT for the Disney Marathon. The dr said NO athletic activity...ok, but I WILL swim :)...just wont kick.

At least I know that the race is not do-able.
Anton, and anyone else doing the race, I will be cheering for y'all

***UPDATE ***
Well after not running for THREE MONTHS, I started back 2 weeks ago. STILL HAVING PAIN, so went back to my ortho yesterday. Xrays show the stress fracture STILL THERE :( . SIX MORE WEEKS of no running. Vancouver 1/2 is out now and I can only hope to be able to do Pacific Crest in June. On the bright side, I have been riding, swimming and doing sweaty (hot) yoga. I CAN start water jogging in my pool, so going to give that a shot.

yeah, doing all that--he said I am doing everything right. Cant boot/cast it with out going above my knee because it is too high up on the tibia (just below my knee). And if he did , then I couldn't bike or swim....

So that means you're just walking around with it? Or maybe you're using crutches just without the immobilization? That sounds like a difficult place indeed. I'm surprised that it would not have healed after 3 months. I cracked 4 metatarsals in a minor motorcycle getoff and had a removable boot for 7 weeks. I took it off only for sleeping, swimming, and showering, and used crutches to get around when it was off. I did not do any biking with it until I was cleared to wean off the boot. I would wonder if the biking is making stuff move around enough that it's having a hard time knitting together. Having had the broken bone experience, I definitely understand how much it sucks. The silver lining was that it was very good for my swim stroke efficiency (although very destructive for some innocent bathing suits).

Best of luck with it.
