1 week until my first sprint.

I went and watched a sprint yesterday here in Pretoria at the Roodeplat Dan. I loved it, I was like a little kid. I loved watching the start with all the people running into the water and then coming out all tired and soaked. Seriously, I got so pumped for next weekend.

I plan on doing a couple of workouts at the beginning of the week then chill until Sunday.

Thanks for all the advice from everyone on this site, especially the swimming, I couldn't swim 200m 7 weeks ago.

My only fear is going to hard at the beginning because I will be so hopped up on adrenaline. Can't wait.

What do they say? Start hard, accelerate in the middle and sprint home!! :D

My novice advice - don't blow up in the swim. Take it easy even though you'll be amped up. First one is for fun and finishing so don't smash yourself in the first 3 minutes.

Have a great time and write a race report :)

Good luck!

Having just gone through this myself - I only offer this thought: Go as easy as you possibly can to start the swim and try to get faster throughout. I botched my first swim, like many, mostly because I went out too hard for me.

In spite of that, I had a great time, and I'm sure you will too.

Enjoy!

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

Good luck,

My only words of advice have already been said, just try to avoid going out to hard on the swim.

Let us know how you do and go get em.

I just did my 1st tri on Sunday... something I forgot... a 2nd pair of shoes!
Need to leave your running shoes in the transition, so a pair of sandals, flip flops, etc. would have been real nice.

Start off to the side in the swim so you don't get clobbered.

Good luck. That's awesome. As has been said, the swim is going to suck no matter what, so don't get wasted on it. Save yourself.

The advice I wish I had gotten before my first tri is to take everything you need to change a flat, and I mean everything. I got a flat, and it ruined the whole race. I can't say it enough, be ready in case of a flat.

I did my first 2 tri's this year, and the first one was the best because it didn't hurt! I took it easy and enjoyed the event. Did the same thing with my first half-marathon this year. I took a few seconds to talk to my family in transitions, when I went by on the course, and I walked water-stops when I wanted to drink. Time was not an issue, but finishing was.

My 2nd Tri I was worried about beating my brother, so I pushed myself. It was fun also, but in a different way...a more painful way.

Have fun!

Someone on this board said this which I think is especially profound on the swim - "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." I try to repeat that in my head while I am swimming and it has allowed me to go further and faster. Just enjoy yourself and have fun.

Goood luck!

Best of luck to you. Some good words of wisdom here so far.

My only advice: get a really good night's sleep 2 nights before the race, because many people don't sleep much at all the night before a big race (and your first one is definitetly "big").

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine! And remember the rule about the swim - if you start to feel weird, just simply flip over and float on your back for a few seconds - it's the best way to stay and the race and stay safe if something doesn't click right.

I believe that quote would be RV's.

Great advice. It is the truth and can really help calm you down on the swim. At least it does for me. Good luck on Sunday.
