Anyone else out there suffering from cold? I am really down about this winter thing. I am still trying to ride, and actually manage 2 hour rides, but it gets dark at 4:00, and despite my lamp and blinking lights attached everywhere, I feel uncomfortable in the traffic. I keep entertaining the idea of a home trainer, but what do you do for 3 hours without wind and scenery, and the same four walls. I threw away my TV to boot last Spring.

:( With stiff shoulders and hating life,

Blitz

It's still ok weather wise here...chilly, so I can ride by bundling up and just going...Lucky to have a place where I can ride in the dark with no traffic. Unless you count deer, racoons and foxes as traffic.
Soon though I'll be forced indoors for long rides on the trainer or rollers...I watch really long movies....
Ya should have hung on to that tv girl!
Don't hate life Blitz...it might come back to bite ya.
Hang in there!

Anton,

Where are you riding near Gaithersburg?

Always interested in local routes.

Blitzy, I share your worry. Riding to and from work each day in the dark is hard. All we can do is dress warm, to the point of being overdressed, sweating to the n'th degree and ride on roads either too early for any sane human to be out or just ride in the light. Good luck. But, it's that time of year!

just do you rides over 2 hours on sat and sun, on weekdays, do 1 hour rides on the trainer, or maybe ride 1 hour, run 1 hour, ride one hour, 3 straight hours on the trainer sounds like a nightmare

Vistring.. I ride the usual stuff out toward River road, but not often.
Also ride in Seneca Creek State Park...loops on low traffic roads...
For really long stuff I often take the MTB and ride the C&O canal towpath for hours...especialy in winter. Great for base building and riding at night.
I work in Frederick County so I'll take the bike to work and ride after....tried to commute, just not feasible.

I empathize.

I'm stuck on the trainer. Its about 40 degrees here now, and I refuse to ride when its this cold.

I usually do my longer rides late Sunday afternoons, as my roomates are around, and the football games are on.

Frankly, I don't even care about the games, but between the roomies, the TV, and my iPod, the time always flys by.

football games used to be the time when i ironed my shirts...now that i don't bother, riding the trainer is just as good an idea!

I do a little swimming (1 or 2 times a week), work with weights every day (alternating upper and lower body workouts every other day), and a little treadmill work. I hate running on the treadmill - I only do half an hour sessions 4 days a week.

I also allow myself to gain about 5-7 pounds over the holidays. It would happen anyway due to the holiday meals. I just feel better about myself if I give myself permission rather than have it happen and act as though I let myself down.

What I really can't stand is when I sweat on my back with my warm clothes going up the hills, and then going down the cold air just turns my muscles into hard knots and my shoulders hurt so bad the next day. Seems like the whole thing is counter productive.

The weather was pretty rough for me this weekend, too.

Do you have good cold weather gear?
I bike in the cold and do lots of hill work - this past weekend it was 32F with wind chill in the 20's. I have not had the same issue as you describe. My outer shell prevents the wind from getting through and the under layers wick the moisture away from the skin so it isn't a problem for me. Maybe some other gear will help...

Sorry guys, I'm with Matt - 60's and 70's here - although we are in a serious drought.

I'm from the North and remember those cold days running on a treadmill in my basement - UGH! Don't miss those days......

I'm in the same boat as many of you. It's hard to get in a bike ride most weekdays with work and shuttling kids here and there. I am still able to get in a ride or two on weekends when the weather cooperates (*knocks on wood).

I have been doing treadmill work several times a week but it is so boring!! I am looking to buy a used trainer for the bike. I have a good place in the basement where I think it will work. That should at least give me some bike time at night -- gotta keep those legs going!!

22 more days of this rotten cold and then I'm off to warmer shores. So excited. Two week of well deserved paradise.
