I've never been, but all I can say is look now and get something ASAP. It only gets harder closer to the date, and from what I hear much of the lodging in that area gets sold out pretty quick. And since the race filled some months back... good luck!
One idea might be to find a place and split it with the 4 of you or something...

For economy try The Edelweiss Motel. 14 Wilmington Rd. Lake Placid. NY. It is walking distance to the race site. Tel (518) 523-3821. Cost about $66.00 per day.

Want to go cheap? There are some great camp sites not foar from town (4 to 6 ) miles. you should still be able to get in those.
I've been at IMLP 4 of the last 5 years to race or vol...it has gotten harder every year to get a place unless you are there the day after the race.
An Example: We stayed at the Golden Arrow this year. The day after the race reservations were accepted, in person only. No online reservations allowed. People started lining up at 2am!
If you really want a room...call around in Late March early April...I got a place one year when someone canceled.

I'm shooting for staying from July 18-21, possibly bringing a friend but definitely going myself. I'm all for splitting a room with people or even doing the camping thing (been so long since Boy Scouts). Any other solid-ish numbers or preferences?
friend and i are thinking about heading up to IMLP to watch and volunteer (he also wants to stand in line the next day) we are only planning on going up for acouple days any cheap places to stay nearby?
