snowshoeing - snow marathons
I snowshoe, but it's more of the back country variety than running. I have the big shoes with good float, kinda awkward to run in.
As far as races go....my ultimate goal is the Mt. Taylor Quad, not sure if it's going to happen this year or next.
definitely want to try that out. just moved up to oregon from north ca, so should be plenty of opportunities. don't know about races this year. That Quadrathon looks cool though... someday as well :)
I was looking for something else to challenge me and had the same thought as you did. Found the following website with sanctioned races. snow shoe racing
Quite a few around the north half of the states that arent sanctioned if you do some google searching. The only negative I've found thus far is the closest marathon distance race to me, Duluth Minnesota, had a winning time of over 4 hours last year. If the winner finishes in that time I dont think there's enough day light for me to finish. :)

it's all about the head-lamp. :D
also, snow would qualify as a low impact surface right? Unless it's packed and iced over...
Tribro: congrats on the move! You finally made it up there!
Hmm, show shoeing sounds like it might be fun. I bet there's gotta be some races going on in WI. How much do snow shoes cost? Can you rent them? I wouldnt want to do a marathon, at least not yet. But a 5 mile race would be something fun to do.

It seems that most shoes run from 150-250. I havent seen a store online that does rentals. I also looked at some of the southern Wisconsin/northwest Illinois ski areas but they didnt have anything to offer snow shoers (not sure thats a word).
You are correct about some races in Wisconsin. Not as many to offer as road races but quite a few 5K and 10K. Definatley somhting I am going to continue looking at.

Brrrr!
You can keep it. I've seen 50 Canadian winters and I'm planning to re-locate to San Diego for 3 or 4 months this winter - do the San Diego marathon Jan 16th or Vegas Jan 30th.
If they have snow in San Diego, I'm going to Acapulco!

AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are making me think about my upcoming move to Milwaukee. Fortunately it’s not going to be until March, but I’ve only lived in Cali and I love wearing shorts and BBQing all-year round. If I want to go snow shoeing, I want to have the opportunity to go to it, not be forced to do it. But if the snow shoes lead to a hot rum toddy, then I’m in :)

anyone plan on doing some snow running this winter? (assuming you have access to snow) what are some winter races that you have planned? I heard that there was a snowshoe marathon sometime this winter, but I don't have any details. Anyone hear about it?
