Hi all,

I'm doing my first sprint Tri this Sunday. The water will be between 65-70 degrees, but it will be 50 degrees outside (our first cold front of the season). Do you think I need a wetsuit? If so, can someone recommend a moderately priced one.

THANKS!!
:)

It's just a sprint...personally, I'd swim without a wetsuit. However, because of the air temp it will feel chilly. Unless you've got a local shop, you probably can't order one for Sunday. Should you decide to get a wesuit for future tris, I recommend ProMotion (wetsuit.com). Very reasonable (I think they still have some closeouts from last year) and really friendly and helpful sales folk.

i just did 2 sprints with water temps 62-68, and i saw some who just wore their swimsuit. i was a little worried about the chill, but didn't have the time or money to get a full wetsuit, so i went out and bought a long sleeve thinskin top. it's an o'neill, and it's 1mm neoprene with .5 mm around the shoulders. the water was cold no matter what, but the top helped keep my core warm... and my legs, oh well. it didn't take long to get comfy in the water though, just depends how sensitive you are to cold water. good luck!

oh, and it's very easy to take off during T1, so it won't slow you down like a full suit would....

Do you guys think that using some vaseline (or other body fluid) would help in case you don't have a wet suit ?

dcid-
i've heard of people using vaseline or baby oil to get an extra layer for warmth. haven't tried it myself though. i guess it works, but then you'd have to wipe it off in T1 or bike and run with goo on yourself. i think i'd rather just be cold.... but let us know if you try it!

Thanks for the reply anyway...

Oh yeah, that makes things lots more clear!

Warm up your core thoroughly before you start is all you need to do. 65-70 degrees? That's typical summer lake temperature in Canada. Kids play all day in it.
No goo, no vaseline, no possum fat.

You have nothing to worry about.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I didn't wear the wet suit and I was fine. I was chilly before getting in the water, but once I got going I didn't even think about it. :D
