beer brake
I drink my fair share of beer, but I don't think I could drink much, and NOT workout.....I think about the beer belly and weight thing too much.
How long will you take off training? I have to work out to some degree or I would go literally NUTS!
Speaking of beer. I read in a bicycling Mag a year or so ago that beer is the #1 sports drink among cyclists. I really didn't understand this unless they meant after a workout.....I hope!
One night I was buying a six pack with my cycling garb on and the cashier said a bunch of cyclsts had been in that night...ummmmmm?
I'm taking about 3 weeks off while in transition after big kahuna half. I inflanted a bit the beer's comment but it was an intense and great tri season for me. The unwinding and celebration are coming close to an end. I'm going start training for a marathon in January. I always look forward to a couple of cold beers after a good work-out thou.
Runners are also well known beer drinkers. In the San Francisco Marathon last August a few guys parked their van and were ofering beer to runners. A runner infront of me had several drinks an continue running. They guy was about my age and looked serious runner actually he finished under 3:15 infront of me. Darn runners dont have to complete two more competitions and can have beer sooner!!
I thought the whole reason we worked out at all was so that we could drink beer!?

Yup!!!! I ran 8 miles this morning, cycled 40 miles this afternoon, and am enjoying a few colds ones right now, ahhhhhh! (well, maybe more than a few on a Sat night)
Actually, a lot of people look at me like I'm nuts because I do tri's and workout out sooo much....and drink beer. I guess I sorta understand their thought process, they just don't understand ours.
Just for fun, how many people have drank waaay to much the night before a hard workout or race. I showed up at a 100 mile club ride not to long ago half hung over....that was brutal. But I did better than I thought I would. I considered it a form of carb loading, lol.
....shakes his head.... (then slowly moves toward the nearby fridge).... yes.... very disapointed..... cough cough

OK, before my first Oly tri I was out a t a party until 1am - race was at 7am. I finished my wine and dragged the girlfriend home, "Not a minute longer!"
I knew I had to be firm. :)
btw, I finished second last in 3:37:52
I got better though, I mean, how could I not?

I was just out for a long run with my buddy who is in training for IM Florida. I was commenting on how I had a few too many at a beer festival the day before. He replied he doesn't drink beer anymore becuase of training. After my heart started beating again I suggested he reevaluates his priorities. Unless your at the elite level I don't think beer, in moderation, will have any impact. Hell many, if not most, endurance people I know got into this so they could drink more beer.
Nothing beats a hoppy IPA on a sunny Sunday afternoon after an 18 mile morning run. Life doesn't get better!
A running partner once told me his philosophy as an age grouper. I figured out that I’ll never be in the first places, will always be competitive among my age group and I always be drinking a few cold ones. So I did follow his values. Here it is for those who want to work out harder but realize to giving-up beer is not an option:
Theory of the Buffalos
A herd of buffalos only can move as fast as the slowest buffalos. When the herd is hunted it is the slowest and weakest buffalos in the herd that are hunted. This natural election is good for the herd because it increases the average speed of the flock. In a very similarly way, the human brain operates as fast as the slowest neurons. Drinking beer (alcohol) in excess, as we know, kills the neurons, but of course it attacks first the weakest and slowest neurons. In this in case the regular consumption of beer kills those neurons making the brain a faster and efficient machine.
i for one appreciate the fine brewing techniques that go into various lagers and stouts, and i heard on npr a study (for which i no longer remember the source: warning) that college students who drank on the weekends performed better on Monday tests because of that very reason of killing off slower to access, long term memory brain cells, and leaving more short term memory cells. the affect (for a limited time) was that the students were able to respond faster to certain criteria. of couse, as we all know there is a point of diminishing returns, and showing up to class completely inebriated will adversely affect your ability to execute. but something interesting to ponder anyway.
this is an interesting study on the same subject, a little terse, but interesting if only because it talks about beer.

I don't know whether that's true or not....but it sounds good to me!!!
The two beers I had just prior to jumping off the 13 storey crane tower with the elastic band attached to my ankles sure improved my ability to bungee jump!
Think it would help on a 70kph descent?
Maybe not.
btw, two guys who stopped for a cold one during IM Canada one year were disqualified.
I don't know if they had to pee in the cup but it's something to think about. Maybe we'll just confine the brewskis to post-race celebrations. I mean they always have a beer garden.
For a few years the title sponsor was a beer company. Anybody remember the Bud Lite Ironman Championships?

Will be running a half-mary this weekend followed by an afternoon at a local Oktoberfest celebration. Here... here... bread and beer!
Oh yeah... Monday will be a rest day.
:)

Yesterday I played soccer and drank beer after the game. Today I barbeque with some bodies, watched the Radiers win and drink beer. What way to take a brake!! we're a week away from beisbol regular season's end; the A's look like will go all the way to the playoffs. The raiders just won TampaBay and they are impressively good, even with gannon out. That's my offseason training.!!
