so yesterday was my first sprint race as a part of a relay team. i did the swim (.5 mi), and my other 2 friends did the bike (12.5 mi) and run (3.3 mi). the swim was in the bay, so the high surf advisory didn't affect us. but we were swimming into the sun, so it was hard to spot the buoys. and i was in the heat with the elite racers, who had orange caps, which was a bad idea, since they looked just like the little orange buoys that i was looking for. and, unknown to me, halfway through the swim, the buoys shifted from our left to our right, and since i'm not a bilateral breather, i felt lost. (i know i should learn how to breathe on the right, but that would mean upsetting my habit of 15 yrs...) so i picked a swimmer to catch and then some people on the shore as my finish. i was all by myself though, and i thought, hmm, i'm either REALLY fast, or off course. unfoutunatly the latter was true. but i wasn't the only one, and when i got to the beach, i just had to jog a bit (ok, 20 ft.) to my right and i was fine. i was hoping to finish the swim in under 15 min... ended up finishing in 13:30!! yay! this was a great team... we all felt that we had the easiest leg of the race, so we thought that we would do well....
which was an understatement... we won our division!! :D and finished 2nd in the overall teams. the only team that beat us was superhuman... they finished in 58 min. (and the swimmer finished in 8:52!! geez..) we finished in 1:09 or so... which is great, but i feel like i missed out on the rest of the race. i missed biking, and yes i'll admit, i even missed running. but in order to get my friends to do the race with me, i had to offer to swim for the team, since they both are terrible swimmers. it was still fun though, and of course, winning isn't bad either... ;) i think that next year we'll all do this race individually... i'm gonna drag them to the pool this winter and teach them to swim!
oh, and did i mention that there's a great white shark swimming around cape cod? this race was south of boston, not too far from the cape.... maybe that's why i swam so fast. hope you all had a great weekend!
