Set in the spectacular Nelson Mandela Bay, an exciting holiday destination that features beautiful beaches and a wide range of nature and wildlife attractions, the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa triathlon became an amazing addition to the Ironman family of races when it was moved up to a full Ironman distance event in 2005.

The race is like no other in many other ways. The African dancers and musicians entertain not only at the pasta party and awards ceremony - they are on hand for the race start and at the finish line, too.

The two-loop swim at the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa triathlon starts at Hobie Beach - one of the many beautiful beaches here in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The bike course at Ironman South Africa is made up of three 60km loops. While the course is "relatively" flat, the high winds and rough roads make it far from fast.

Like the bike course, the run is a three-loop affair. It begins with an out-and-back section along the beach, following the same road as the bike course begins on. All of the roads along the course are closed, which means that the runners will take one side of the two-lane road, while the cyclists will use the other.

With 60 miles in the pool, over 2,000 mi on the computrainer and 500mi mostly on the treadmill my wife and I are well prepared for our 15th Iron finish. Training indoors for a "winter" ironman is not everyone's cup of tea but this will be our 4th "winter" ironman. (IM-AZ 2 times, New Zealand last year and now IM-SA) Winters here in Vermont are long especially if you don't ski so this is how we spend our long winter days. This will be a very exciting adventure. The week following the race will be spent a national game reserve and a time to recover and recharge for the 2008 season of racing ahead. What a great hobby!
