Matt Haugen was the USA Triathlon National Teams Coach from 1997 to 2000, and the director of USA's first Olympic Triathlon Program. During his tenure at USA Triathlon, Matt directed the athlete and coach development programs, as well as the National Resident TeamÊfrom the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Matt was the Team USA Coach at the Triathlon World Championships from 1997 to 2000, as well as the 1999 Pan Am Games Coach. He was named US Olympic Committee National Triathlon Coach of the Year in 1997, 1998, and 1999, during which time he coached Laura Reback toÊher first ITU world cupÊsilver medal, Hunter Kemper to his first two USA Pro Championships and a win at the Pan Ams Game Qualifier, and Doug Friman, Victor Plata, Gina Derks, Michael Smedley, and Kristin Armstrong to their first elite finishes at national and international competitions.

Coach Matt Haugen currently resides in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he directs and coaches his Triathlon Training Team (T3), and providesÊphysical and mental training plansÊand expert consultationÊto triathletes across the USA. Matt is the staff coach and writer for American Tri Magazine, and a frequent speaker and coach at triathlon clinics and camps throughout the USA.

Matt has a B.A. in psychology from St. Olaf College, an M.S. in exercise science from Penn State University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in sport psychology at the University of Minnesota.

In 2003, Matt was named the new Head Cross Country and Track Distance Coach at Macalester College (St. Paul, MN). He served St. Olaf College (MN) in the same capacity from 1985 to 1997.

As a former elite athlete, Matt recorded 10K and marathon bests of 30:30 and 2 hours and 23 minutes, respectively. His triathlon career included a 2nd place finish at the World's Toughest Triathlon, three top-16 finishes at Ironman Canada, two top-75 finishes at Ironman Hawaii, and a personal best time of
8 hours and 41 minutes at Ironman Germany.
